Re: Why doesn't every digital synth have a digital output?
One issue is that mixing multiple digital source that aren't slaved to the same word clock is somewhat problematic. There would need to be sample rate conversion on each input, which add cost and could degrade the audio if not done well.

...if they were more about selling individual modules I'd be looking at starting one, but as it is, the lump-sum/packaged nature of them means that I'll have to see how far I can get with PlanB and Livewire until I get a real job :) As near as I can tell, the main excitement around the Serge M-seri...

Re: West Coast vs West Coast
Any format can be conventional or experimental depending on how you patch it. That's more or less what I meant by citing the programming adage "You can write bad Fortran in any language." (although I guess that you have to be a computer geek to get that joke) That said, I do think that some systems...

West Coast / East Coast
As far as the whole West-Coast / East-Coast thing, this is paraphrased from things I said on Analog Heaven: I'm not sure I agree with these distinctions, but attributes of the two different styles seems to be: West Coast: emphasis on creating complex waveforms at the oscillator more exotic control v...

note the Serge was largely based on the Buchla, although thankfully not the price. Have you priced Serge lately? The days of it being a "poor man's Buchla" are long gone. Now it's firmly in the "I can almost afford a Buchla" camp. the "west coast" idea is irrelevant these days, but the SF bay/silic...

Re: Buchla 200 - anything new even remotely close?
Besides the new 200E which is very expensive, are there any modular companies that are making modules similar in function and sound to the 200 series? The 200e isn't really more expensive than vintage 200 series. I was lucky enough to be able to use a 200 system in college, and I currently have a 2...

The reason for the "strange" connector between the Voice 400 and the Keyboard was that, in addition to pitch CV, Gate, and some CVs from the joystick, the keyboard had a keypad just like the one on the Voice that could access the presets on the Voice remotely. There was also some redundant power c...

Sorry Chris, my apologies! I completely misread your post ...I'm pretty bleary. No worries. Tone, in this textual medium, can be hard to read, particularly when hopped up on decongestant. :) I really do wish MMM & George, and by extension you, Matrix, and whomever else was involved early, the best ...

I did find it a touch ironic that you chose an oblique diss at someone elses hard work as your first post but I suppose I can't fault you for your own opinion though I know its not based on any first-hand experience. How hurtful do you think that is? A lot of people have been saying awful things ou...

before the MMM you had to have a Synthi, an ARP2600 (semi-) or a modded, custom monosynth in order to have a portable/suitcase modular. Are you forgetting the Doepfer suitcase? It's been available for a while, and is more or less as portable as the MMM. Dude, you created an account just to say that...
