Re: 19" basic rack starter setup advice please
Hi. I am resurrecting this old thread of mine, with an update of what I would like, based on changed use cases on my side. I hope the thread gets bumped to the top and I get some useful advice based on the new info. I've reduced the list of 1U or 2U modules I'd like in my 19" rack, to the following:...

Re: 19" basic rack starter setup advice please
I was not clear in some parts of what I'd like to do: I don't always want to be using my PC/DAW - because of practical reasons: - My PC/DAW setup is not quite updated yet and in the meantime I'd like to play from a controller to the ROMpler and output to audible sound for entertainment purposes (sel...

19" basic rack starter setup advice please
Hi, I would like to populate a cube 19" rack with 1U or 2U hardware to supplement my DAW (mostly Cakewalk). Most of my activity was traditionally around writing MIDI files, but wanting to record from a ROMpler into sound tracks and then apply postproduction to get the sound better. I would like the ...

Re: Suggest me a starter setup please.
Hi, After some time I would like to renew this "effort" again of starting some private, small-scale music production efforts again (even if it is just duplicating songs / writing covers for myself on Friday evenings on my own :D ). I have not acquired/bought any equipment since my original question ...

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
To be honest I have not tried or listened to many software samplers, and I aim to do so first, BUT I know for a fact I am an old-school type of guy who likes fiddling with the knobs and stuff, and thus prefer hardware. (1) Use a controller (2) I dunno, but I use software sample players all the time...

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
Thanks. I hope to get closer to the real thing using the I-7, by at least choosing closer-sounding instruments (which was often a problem on the SC-88), plus being able to edit the EQ of each past, plus hopefully less tinny sounding patches. But apart from that, I also want to write my own stuff, w...

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
@charl313, it sounds like you are steering your comments to rationalize a major purchase. The advice that has been offered so far is your best bet for a lot of reasons. If you decide that you really want to upgrade your gear, 1. there will always be some"better" gear to lust over, 2. If you want a ...

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
Just to put it into perspective but There is no way you can get your rompler to do the work of all this. http://i58.tinypic.com/raorc9.jpg There are some expensive industry standards in just this one pic. Paul Hammond. Plus these guys below, my heroes :) http://footballandmusic.co.uk/wp-content/upl...

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
Listening to the demo assured me that the most important part was probably missing in the discussion. It's not about romplers/nonromplers, or better/worse quality of samples. It's about composition, voicing, intonation, rhythm and tempo modulations (like swinging), dynamics, etc etc etc - a pile of...

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
It could also be that it was quantised against a simple regular straight grid (no tempo/measure length changes, everything equal), while probably it should have been done against a "swinged" one - like, when odd measures are actually somewhat longer/shorter than the even ones (speaking in tempo par...

Probably just on some of the instruments... for those type of music?commodorejohn wrote:The simplest solution for humanization I've found is to just get an actual human being to record it.

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
In short, you are never going to get close enough. Even if you buy the exact same gear used on the record (which would probably cost an arm and a leg). Every producer and engineer has ways in which they work. Also, you mentioned Compression earlier... Compression is not just about loudness, it is u...

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
To keep it short (and to keep everybody even more confused  ), I'd say that "quantization killed the cat" in your demo. I think straightforward quantization always does. Yeah that is a bit confusing since I'm unsure which tracks should not have been quantised. For sure, the vocal track is unq...

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
Yeah, the difference between that and the original is just what we've said - professional production (recording, mixdown, mastering). What you mainly need for that is a trustworthy listening environment (good speakers, acoustic treatment, good DAC, good ears) and a lot of experience. You could star...

Re: MIDI files with ROMplers vs The Real Thing
Hi all, Thanks for all the advice. So what I've done, for demonstration purposes and hopefully to further this discussion, is to record my MIDI file (SMF) version of "This Time I Know It's For Real" ((c) Donna Summer, 1989) from my SC-88 to WAV format, using the highest quality available, and then t...
