Re: Sequencer Capabilities E-mu XL-7 Vs Yamaha RS7000
Have fun! I have a XL-7 with XL, TSCY, Vintage Pro, and Protean Drums ROMs. balma certainly spoke very well to the sequencing power of the Command Station - I've never come close to reaching its limits. I tend to mainly explore the synthesis on the E-mus - once you begin to make use of the Z-planes,...

Re: Yamaha SY-77 vs Roland D-50
Most TG77 LCD backlights will be shot or near it by now. It can be replaced for not too much coin - less than shipping the old one back and getting another one, only to find out it is dim too.

Re: too many f**k samples
1700 would make sense if you have like 8 velocity layers and like 4 round robin variations. Then it would be 'only' 53 instruments. Then again, they'd really have to be samples from a source that's either really acoustic or otherwise varied and dynamic (like FM or physical modeling). Agreed, very m...

Re: DX7-Type Tone Generators (Rackmount, Desktop, etc.)
My top picks are: TX216/416/816 TX7 TX802 TG77 FS1R DX200 The first three, and first two in particular, deliver true DX7 sound. The third nearly does so, but with improved fidelity. Another bonus of the TX802 is multitimbrality. The TG77 is another flavor of FM that expands the posibilities. It has ...

Re: SY-77 vs DX-7IIFD
Given the user-defined algorithms of the SY-series, this is a non-issue. All the DX algos (and more) can be realized.mrfrisky330 wrote:(if you can find the DX7 algorithm of course as some are missing)

Re: Yamaha AxK owners.
The fact it can load Akai is quite nice, and especially suitable if one is loading samples of say, a piano. On the other hand, libraries that are specifically programmed to take advantage of the AxK architecture are great in that they utilize the unique functions of the engine - osc detune, multiple...

Re: Why buy hardware synths?
There are bands truly innovative. A good example is GUS GUS. Polydistortion album still amazing me 10 years after its release,, they use electronic sounds in a very innovative way!. They do what it's not suppose to be do it. The bass and scratchs sounds on "Believe" are out of any comparison. Other...

Re: Your synths and their function/place within your setup
Monomachine - for external midi sequencing, don't like the internal sound engines, too casio sounding for my ears. I can appreciate that sentiment. That said, I have found that a couple of the engines in particular have sweet-spots that are not "casio"-like at all - the FM engines, and surprisingly...

Because they each have different synthesis function and sound.Umbe78 wrote:I'd add to this thread "Why buy/have more than 5 synths?"
OK, scratch that. Only get 5 synths. Spend the rest of the coin on effects processors!

Re: Let's talk about strings, baby
Perhaps needless to say, samplers can deliver in a big way as they can reproduce difficult-to-synthesize attack transients, and near-perfect sustains and other effects - both for solo instruments and ensemble groups. The Roland S-760 offers nothing particularly special as it concerns string synthesi...

In short, white noise with a 3db/oct. lowpass filter should get you roughly there.

Here are some links to images taken from the legacy Mac editor for the Korg Z1. They are not pretty, but they do give an idea of the depth and programmability of the unit. Re: Kurzweil Synth as efx processor?
i just found out that the k2600/k2661 have the same engine as the KSP8 mammoth processor, and there is indeed a LIVE mode... yummy! I just found one used with sampling option and other goodies for less than half the price of a KSP8... it was a no brainer. KDFX in a K2600/K2661 has most of the same ...

Yes, it does. I think Don Solaris has documented the process of calibrating the DAC.Sexor wrote:I wonder if the JD-800 has something similar. I had one for a while and it sounded like 8-bit s**t.

Re: I need a good affordable Vocoder
I agree, vocoders on so many pieces of gear now.
That said, I recommended the Clavia Nord MicroMod because unlike most all the rest of the pack, it has that classic 80s tone (if you wish).
cheers,
Ian
