Re: Favorite "dirty" synth?
I like my Waldorf MicroWave XTk30 and Elektron SIDStation Rack Custom for dirt too, but in general, I prefer using my Clavia Nord Modular , Korg OASYS PCI , and (only kinda a synth) Yamaha A5000 for shaping and making dirt. The Yamaha A5000 is excellent for adding dirt to other things when used as a...

Re: Analog synths and Headroom
Your volume control on the synth (or preamp gain, etc.) determines the potential peak signal level. The shape of your VCA ADSR determines the dynamic range of the sound. Setting these in concert will allow you to record a synth with a combination of preserved dynamics and controlled level. Of course...

Re: MicroModular and midi controllers
Try and find a used Peavey PC1600x. I use this sliderbox, and it is a treat.

I have not used the Behringer, but it gets good reviews and there is a lot of current support for it.

Ian

Re: Favorite "dirty" synth?
I listed the Clavia Nord Modular as one of my dirtiest synths because there are so many tools with which to mangle the audio, and once having done so, so many ways to filter and EQ it to sound musical. Just some of the dirt tools (available per voice or post-amp) include: clip overdrive wavewrap dio...

Re: Rackmount ROMplers
Roland JD-990 is a good one, yea - I love mine, used to be a JD-800 owner.
That said, your mention of the Yamaha CS6x is a good one - great-sounding filters and effects processors in that one.
cheers,
Ian

Re: Acid test for distortion pedals
I'm guessing those were done serial. That might be fine for a 303 (I've never owned one), but in general, I find the best tones from dirt pedals + synths come from using those pedals in parallel with the source tone, mixed to taste with perhaps a touch of EQ/filtering. Thanks for the link - I enjoy ...

Re: Thought I could get away with sampled waveforms
The waveforms basically came with the sampler and are automatically loaded into the RAM. I don't know what synth they come from, but I can almost tell you with certainty it's not a Roland. Also, it sounds like they were just sampled on one key. If they were only sampled on one key, that would expla...

Re: Thought I could get away with sampled waveforms
I got myself a nice S3000XL a few months ago, and, seeing there were analog waveforms (or course digitally sampled, but hey I'll have to record digitally eventually, and this machine has a great sound to it...) I thought hey I don't need to buy more synths since this cool sampler has EG's, LFO's, f...

Re: what age did you get into synthesis?
When I was 4 years of age in 1973, my father worked at a tv/radio station. When the station did local radio commercial production and they needed a young kid's voice, I was called into duty. I would sit in the voice booth and read my lines, but what really captured my attention was what I saw throug...
