It's stereo but not true stereo. You can't pan the oscillators or the other sources. You probably could I guess with an internal modification. If you run something through its RCA inputs it preserves the stereo field of the source. I'm not sure what the prejudice against using headphone outs is abou...

you, of ALL people, should understand why I say it is a pointless venture to try to effectively generate the analog experience with a computer. That is true. The sound can come close but certainly not the interface! It is much more fun to tweak a synth than move a mouse. Well, unless we're talking ...

It is an absolute waste for companies, engineers, designers, and musicians to spend all of this time and money trying to emulate something that really cannot be emulated effectively with digital means. I don't agree. There are convenience, cost, practicality and reliability issues to consider. For ...

Even though I'll probably never perform live I've always been curious about using tape, or a digital recorder for backing tracks and drums. Is it a big no no now a days? I know that certain bands in the past of have done this and no one seemed to care or notice. It just seems more reasonable than h...

1. Make sure to use proper furniture equipment. I would say use what you've got and can afford. It's great if you can have the proper gear and it's great if you can't. I know a guy who used an end table for his Rhodes. Heck, I sometimes use a wooden TV dinner tray to hold my stuff. I also have a pl...

Never touched a Murf but I had a Resonator for several months. If all you want is a straight filter then that's a serious monster. If you have the ability ot control it with CV it will certainly come alive. No LFO so you'd have to have your hands on it at all times. The other thing that bugged me ab...

I've owned both a 106 and JX3P. I did not like the Jx3P much at all. Nothing scientific to base that on, other than I just didn't warm up to it. I was surprised to have fallen in love with the 106 I had. One thing that would certainly endear a JX3P to me over the Juno 106 is the failing voice chip s...

I hear this all the time, about how awful Reason is. It's for beginners, the softsynths are too thin, it would be awesome if only it did audio in and MIDI out. I think Reason is pretty awesome as it is. The audio in and MIDI out issues can be taken care of with a little bit of ingenuity and I think ...

The drumming on p**n has the same sound and feel as the stuff on Seventeen Seconds and Faith . That really flat, thick, "drum in a vacuum" sound. Real drums that sound a lot like Linn Drums, especially the snare drum. "One Hundred Years" is obviously drum machine and I remember reading somewhere tha...

I'd have to vote for the non-knobby mid'80s Roland analogs like the JX8P, JX-10 and the Alpha Junos. Same with the HS series. Usually under $200. Great pads and such. I'd also give a vote for the Kawai K3 and Ensoniq SQ-1. You can get both of those for under $200 usually as well. Digital waveforms w...

No drum machines. That would be the sound of contact mics applied directly to drums. Flat, flat, flat. But it does sound amazingly just like Linn drums. I think the synth was a Roland RS-09. Micke would remember. There is a very fine article on the recording of this album at Sound On Sound. http://w...

I recently downgraded from a really nice drumkit I had to something that better reflects my semi-retirement from playing drums in other bands. So I had about a grand to play with after buying a less expensive kit but then we decided that we wanted to move our kids from one Montessori school to anoth...
