It's not a crime to use a modular for basic synth sounds. After all, that's how the basic sounds got developed in the first place. Crazy modulations are easy, making useful musical sounds is a lot harder. If I was choosing between Arturia's Mini and Modular I would take the Modular, it comes with pl...

It can be aggressive but not overly so. Somewhere between a Roland and a Moog sound. As cl516 mentioned, no PWM which is unfortunate. The VCA has a "thru" mode so you can use it for creating endless drones without having to actually play any notes. The more complex sounds come from a couple of featu...

I owned a Perfourmer, what would you like to know about it? I dont know too much about synthesis but unlike other synths this one looks like a very basic and simple one Yes, each of the four synths is extremely basic and easy to learn, but you can combine them in interesting ways to do more complex ...

I've owned PAiA's 9700 modular (not the Fatman) as well as a dotcom system. The PAiA VCOs and filters sound much thinner and raspier. Out of the box Fatman has no LFO, no square waves or noise, filter will not self-oscillate and the MIDI response is limited to 4 octaves (C1-C5??). That's not to knoc...

Is there really no magazine's like that over here(North America)? I haven't gone into book stores in ages. There used to be , there's a few computer-oriented DIY mags still around. Many PAiA products were first written up as projects in mags like Radio Electronics , you got the full schematic and p...

paia requires 18V and not 15V like other fracks, but you can make paia run on 15V The 9700 does have an unusual power setup. The main supply (part of the MIDI-CV module) is unregulated +/-18VDC. Then there are regulators to derive +/-15VDC on each module. Most other makers use regulated +/-15VDC su...

I've owned three 9700 systems over the years (don't ask why I keep selling one and then buying another :? ). It has been the cheapest modular system you could buy since 2000, though most of the savings are because it's a kit. The final product has a very flexible MIDI-C/V converter and very cool EGs...
