And by that logic I think you could consider the following: a carrier + modulator pair is essentially a bandpass filtered signal. Adding a modulator makes the signal harmonically more complex. The pitch of the carrier is the lowest cutoff frequency and the modulation intensity determines the highest...

What would you use those dozens of knobs for with the DX7? You're right in a way - FM benefits more from "macro controllers" where a turn of the knob causes 3 or 4 other parameters to change - negative, positive, scaled, etc. because that's the nature of synthesis on those machines. The books recom...

Jupiter 6 can do it without trouble. And is ther something other than Vanguard that gets those types of sounds Yes. http://theheartcore.com/music/armin_communication_dull.mp3 http://theheartcore.com/music/armin_communication_shiny.mp3 Both the same softsynth (Xhip, free plugin), but notice the diffe...

I really like the sound of that Arp soloist, it’s got that Starsky and Hutch thing going on, are they quite rare and expensive on e-bay? Depends; because it's a preset machine I don't think they're fetching stratosphere prices. Does it also have a similar string sound to the Solina? No, it's a mono...

Define "better" here. http://www.amazona.de/index.php?page=26&file=2&article_id=714 In case you can't read German, aliasing is noticeable (much less so on the JP). In some cases it can be charming; when it's not, it's grating. The idology here really cracks me up sometimes. That I don't disagree wi...

What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
Stop worrying about the name, VA is short and catchy and pretty much everyone knows what you mean by it.

first up, those pseudo-violin sounds Good one, but string machines are pre-MIDI, heavy (the Solina weighs a lot), and require love and care; not something you want to haul around. A laptop is the better solution since it can do what the sample-based machines can't - the chorus. (this is Reaktor 5 a...

Yeah, but you won't have the Soundtrack patch anymore :(.

I've got an XP30 which is a JV in a box.

Recommended expansionboards: Keys of the 60's and 70's, Vintage Synthesizers. See http://www.synthmania.com/ for some demos :).

The RM1X sequencer is a lot better than the Ion's. I'm not surprised, since the Ion only has an arpeggiator. Worst case of apples and oranges I've ever heard. Now, without much further ado: My setup is: SH32,Rm1x,4 channels mixer,Athlon AMD 2200+,Cubase SX,few Vsts Don't forget to put your pictures...

I'm wondering too because there's nothing in the manual I can see about this, and Vintagesynth.org says it's monotimbral - e.g. no layering/stacking possible. It's the DX21 which does that.

Something I really enjoy about both DX7s - albeit that the mk1 is better in that regard - is the feeling of the keys. Great keyboard action.

Great demo, Martin! I like the melody at 0:47 - sounds a bit like the song ("The Vents") of the Ecco The Dolphin soundtrack (Sega Genesis, also FM) :).
