If I were forced to choose, I'd take the JP before the 106, moreso because it's got dual oscillators than anything else. I've frankly no use for an analog polysynth with just one oscillator per voice and no on-board pitch shifting.

The truth is, the polyphonic synh world is like rock 'n' roll; you can't have purism. It's about hybrids, including the original Oberheim synths.

Could Jupiter8 have been referring to synths without programmable memory? Then, I'd mention those instruments, along with one that doesn't instantaniously constitute a "string synth," the Moog Opus 3.

It's funny, but there was rumored to be a Moog modular synhesizer comissioned by Herb Deutsch for the Jazz in the Garden festival in NYC in 1969 in the same quartet from which Keith Emerson's synth emerged. This one was hard-wired for quadrophonic performance. since this was before David Rossum & Sc...

You didn't mention Modulations! I'll admit, I've yet to get a DVD copy of that film, but I've always enjoyed it. It's a great "random account" of all the different subgenres of electronic and dance music. [One film that isn't expressly about electronic music/synths per se but certainly has its share...

Yes' 90125 Keyboards

In 1984, there was an article on the making of the Yes record, 90125 that talked about the return of Tony Kaye and the set-up he had, back then. In the studio, he used a Fairlight, Oberheim OB8 and Kawai grand piano. On the stage, he used a Yamaha DX7 to "simulate" a lot of te Fairlight sounds. What...

The Elctro-Harmonix Mini-Synthesizer???? If I wanted that keyboard, I'd look for a Wasp or Gnat by EDP. I don't need one with only that many sliders.

All the same, if Wendy Carlos was playing a 2-part invention on a Memorymoog, would you like the Moog better intact, or if the filters weren't functioning and the oscillators did nothing but sound?

I also think the filter is most important. You can have your individual-sounding oscillators, sure, but you need a good, thick filter. (In yesteryears, it was the ARP Axxe filter that turned my friend's Korg X5 into a thick-sounding "string machine." Just a drag that he can't just do that on his own.

In my opinion, the best-sounding FM synth is the Yamaha DX7 MkII. Best sounding wavetable synth: Korg Wavestation Best -sounding LAS synth: Korg 01W Best-sounding hardware sampler: E-Mu Emulator II Best-sounding workstation: Yamaha Motif Best-sounding virtual analog: Novation SuperNova II Best-sound...

No, it wasn't that small. It had a keyboard with phono in and out.
