Re: How Do You Play Synthesizers Through PC Speakers? What D
MIDI does not carry sound. You can either get an audio interface with at least 6 inputs (three pairs, one pair each for each synth) which will route their audio into the computer (and back out to the speakers), or get a simple audio interface with a pair of inputs and a small submixer, so you can pl...

Re: Samples, soundfonts, gigfiles, oh my!
Well, basically, any sampler can load a single sample, which is easy to deal with. However, you often want to load multiple samples, so you can map them across the keyboard, or layer them and so on. That's what instrument formats like Soundfont, Gigasampler are, they are basically files that contain...

Re: Help with 90s synth
The DX7 was a staple keyboard for TOTP mimes as they always had ready access to them. What a band mimes with on TOTP usually doesn't have anything to do with what was used on record. Given the genre and the time period, it's likely to be a mid-priced analog polysynth like a Juno 106, ESQ1, something...

Re: Sony DPS-M7 & DPS-F7, and other double-personality devic
Very cool! It's not uncommon for multiple devices to share hardware but differ in "data' only. I can think of various sound modules which are likely candidates (eg, the Emu Proteus range, the Kurzweil 1000 modules, and so on), and likely some FX units as you say. Looking at something like the Yamaha...

Re: Simmons SDX Sample Libraries?
There are some YouTube videos so there are people maintaining full systems out there - I suspect the library status is similar to the state of the Synclavier - owners are protective of the library as it's part of their investment into the machine, so they aren't keen to help set it free, which is un...

Re: Gadget for Mac Le
Hm. Those little pop-up menus won't stay visible for me for some reason. I can't save any of the patches. Does your system conform to the system requirements? I had a hard time finding the manual/documentation for some reason, but it's probably just me being a dope. I figured out the 1 and 2 keys f...

Re: Gadget for Mac Le
Yep, I downloaded it and had only a very quick play.
The scale button brings up a popup with scale and arp settings for me.
The "1" key turns the arpeggiator on or off, as listed in the keyboard shortcuts documentation and the manual, which should be the first places to look for features etc.

Simmons SDX Sample Libraries?
Has anyone come across any of the Simmons SDX sample libraries, whether the factory library, or anything? Along with some more generic stuff, they had kits sampled and compiled by people like Bill Bruford, Steve Levine and Graham Broad. It would be great to hear what the factory library supplied wit...

Re: How old is "Vintage"?
XV3080 -- 2 line display, again Why they do that this way again?! (some other downsized models also) XV5080 -- big graphic display, again, extra bank, now with 4 SRX, and sample player. Well, by looking this way they just made XV3080 with a 2 line display to give a reason to buy XV5080 later. As fa...

Re: How old is "Vintage"?
When it comes to JV1080 then sometimes the old synth is just a old synthesizer model, but not vintage, as they are just deliberately downsized model of the other models in a queue before launching "newer and better" models. Could be. Could equally be that the JV1080 was the start of a new platform ...

I'd be smiling if I was booting up the Fairlight in the actual '80s... not so much now...
