Re: TB-303 use in pop/rock music?

Ok, this is a quick and imperfect demo, but it should get the differences across. I grabbed the DX7 bass, and quickly made up from memory (not matching by ear) some patches to play the bass line, and recorded it, no velocity, from my laptop keyboard. - FM8 standard DX7 bass preset. There are many va...

Re: TB-303 use in pop/rock music?

Do you have an example of what you are talking about that perhaps sounds closer than the DX7 bass to help me tell what makes it a big enough difference to easily rule out a DX7? Ok I'll knock up an example to illustrate shortly. Dear god I also just realized the amount nerdy dorkyness of what I'm a...

Re: playstation startup screen: what synth?

This is "5th Sweep" from the XV-5080 (which includes all the 1080 and 2080 presets, so it should be the same patch).

That's the classic DX7/FM bass sound, and in no way does it sound like the bass on Criticise, or anything remotely analog filter like.

Because I know what an analog filter sounds like, and I know what a DX7 sounds like.

Re: TB-303 use in pop/rock music?

Yes way, very DX7 bassy and slap bassy. But it doesn't have a low pass resonant filter, and that's clearly (to me) being modulated here. In no way does this sound DX7/FM-ey to me. Sounds like, and always has to me, to be an analog synth. They can sound thick, if that is your misconception. Don't kn...

Re: have you ever bought the same peice of gear 3 times?

You guys are crazy! Mind you, thinking about it, I had a CZ-101 when I was a kid that I eventually sold, expecting a plugin version to happen very soon. And year after year it never came, so I eventually started a project to do my own emulation, so I bought a CZ-1 to access my old sounds, and ...

Re: TB-303 use in pop/rock music?

I hear what sounds to me to be DX type basses, my guess is a DX7 or derivative. In "Criticise'..? No way is that a DX7 bass, it's a nice thick, filter modulated analog mono synth. No way is it a 303, from what I hear. Always liked that bass part. Doesn't sound Moogy to me, I'm maybe thinking of a S...

Re: What is the sexiest looking synth of all time?

It's funny how big a part nostalgia and droolworthy products that were a dream back in the day still hold such an attraction to us, even way beyond their practical use often (there are still plenty of instruments I'd love to own even if they aren't good, or I can do all their sounds already etc). I ...

Re: What is the sexiest looking synth of all time?

Intersting you like the CS-M's so much. My mate had a CS-20M when growing up (as I've mentioned before) and while it was nicely built, it doesn't look that great imo.

My topsexy are DX1, DX5, Matrix-12, Jupiter-8... and others not quite as much, but like Prophet VS, JX-10, Prophet-5...

Re: D-50 Sound Track Patch on Super JV?

Just did a quick first pass at manually mapping the SoundNigth 1 patch over to the XV - hasn't come out too bad, though some parameters need a little more tweaking and I haven't done the effects yet. But for a first pass it's ok and reasonably close to Paulo's demo. The main difference being that th...

Re: D-50 Sound Track Patch on Super JV?

Ok, it seems "SoundNigth <1>" patch is in the JD-800 bank available online called "jose2.syx". I'm assuming it's the same patch by the name, so I'll give that one a go... The bank also includes the "<2>" version as well. If the one Paulo demos above is a modified version of this from the JD-800 patc...
