The Mk1 distortion is great. Once the input is past 12 o'clock, you get a very nice overdrive which works well with the filters.

For a hundred dollars more you could get a used Evolver, which is quite the stereo filterbank (with bonus features including being a kick-ass monosynth).

I could be wrong - but you might want to start with a Karplus-Strong patch, basically trigger an impulse into a delay line which is patched back to itself, with the desired pitch controlling the delay time? If you carefully put some stuff (filters, distortion) into the feedback path, you should get ...

And although it takes some learning, the Elektron stuff is one big sweet spot. Particularly the MDUW.
