The best way I've found to portray the elusive and subtle quality is to tell people to listen to synthesizer recordings of the 60s... when it was basically synthesizer straight to tape... and compare those recordings to the synthesizer you have. There is a difference... a quality... that is lacking...

Are we talking saturated or unsaturated fat here (i.e. is the CS-80 lard or is it extra virgin olive oil?)

And does that mean that a VA, no matter how good it sounds, can only aspire to be partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, or worse, Olestra?

Re: My newest drum sampler - Korg ES-1 mk1

I'm also going to mount internal NiMH rechargeable batteries in it for completely portable sampling. If you get that working, maybe you could post a little how-to. I'd love to make my EA-1 cordless, and I'm sure other Electribe owners would be interested provided it doesn't require any super-comple...

Yeah, the Evolver's on my list for the future, but I really need to keep it $300 or under for right now.

Eowave Filter Bug, anybody have one?

So, I'm trying to figure out what to blow my tax stimulus check on when it shows up. I was thinking Frostwave Resonator, but the Eowave Filter Bug looks pretty cool too (doesn't have the HPF like the Resonator, but it's stereo and has an LFO). I can't find much info on the Filter Bug online, and a s...

I'm a big fan of panning for effect; I love those '60s records from when stereo first came in and people weren't trying to be super subtle with it yet (although some of that stuff does sound a little jarring on headphones). For the more static rhythmic sounds (drums, bass) I usually just pick a spot...

Once one can get rid of the ideas that - samplers are only useful for certain musical genres - samplers may be useful for everyone else but you - samplers should only sample sounds synthesizers can't recreate - samplers should only sample "dry" sounds things start to look better. They're amazing to...

I will probably someday pick up an EA-1 if only to have the MIDI sequencer. it also makes an interesting audio thru FX unit. As long as mine is not used as a bass synth it's allowed to stay in the studio. I frequently used my ES-1 as an FX unit when I had it. The EA-1 doesn't have as many FX option...

Sounds like you just need to find a new keyboard player who isn't an asshole. I don't know if that's easier or harder than just buying new gear.

Whilst I'm still rambling on this thread. What do you guys make of the Analogue Factory Experience ? A high price for a software package and a small controller keyboard. While the keyboard matches that on the screen exactly, I'd take an Axiom, Xboard or Novation over that one any time of the day. A...

Someone give me an all-analogue Electribe EA-1, and I'll be in heaven. (I can dream, can't I?) What's wrong with a Jomox? A Jomox what? Do they make something other than drum machines and filters these days? I guess there's that Neuronium thing, but that doesn't really seem comparable to an Electri...

Provided you can do a professional quality job, you're not so much diminishing the value as you are narrowing the market of potential buyers. There's a reason so many things come in boring old black and gray: most people don't have strong feelings about those colors, like many people do toward brigh...

This thing: http://www.zzounds.com/item--ZOMMRT3 is super cheap, easy to use, runs for a long time on 4 AA batteries, and definitely sounds like a drum machine (not any particular "classic" drum machine, but a drum machine).

I generally have all my synths connected to a mixer, and I find it handy to keep a spare tuner connected to the mixer's headphone out jack (since I rarely use it for headphones). You're lucky you haven't burned out your tuner (or headphone amp) yet. Guitar tuners are line level devices. Headphone o...
