OK, sounds like you know what you're doing. The only way to be sure, with caps though, is an ESR measurement. It's possible they're out of spec, even if they look OK. The bulging and smell is just further down the road of decay. Those are zener diodes, or germanium diodes, doesn't look like a factor...

Ah, ok. It is integrated. Are you able test it i.e. with a scope? Failing that, do the caps near it look OK? Any bulges or leaks? A pic would help.

Amazing lucky find! It looks very good. Disconnect the power supply and test it. Most likely the PSU needs a recap.

Or, if you are gonna flip it and want to be sure not to damage it, sell it without powering it up.

If it works fine, don't recap it. Only the PSU should be recapped as a matter of course.

As for rack replacements more fitting for the living room I've found many options, but of course at a price :o I don't know how much a carpenter would take for making one, but if I work out the dimensions/design it shouldn't be that much work for someone with the precision cutting skills to at leas...

I had a quick look at the service manual. Doesn't seem to have any test points or internal calibration that can be done. Open to correction on that. "Metallic" would indicate the DAC- the bias on pin 8 is supposed to be half of Vdd. Dunno if that can be adjusted? And are/ is the cap/ caps in the LPF...

The 555 is not the actual oscillator (i.e. you don't hear it directly). That blog I linked has a good clear explanation of its role. Any 555 will do.
