Re: Octave Cat help needed...

Thanks Steve - It turned out we actually did have schematics for the original octave, but you're right - I'm not sure how much they differ. My understanding was they just revised the boards for SRM models? At any rate, I took your original advice and went ahead and replaced IC33, LM1458. This thing ...

Re: Octave Cat help needed...

Thanks, that's a good start.

Is there a service manual floating around though that isn't the SRM version?

Octave Cat help needed...

Here's an interesting one... I don't know how much people know about these other than they're supposed to be an "Arp Odyssey knockoff" which I really don't see being the case, but anyway... We seem to have lost VCO2. Just prior to that the keyboard was producing the same note across all octaves. I d...

Re: Why doesn’t the OB-8 get more love?

Maybe my ears aren't as sensitive as some, but having compared an OB-8 and OB-Xa side-by-side, I will say they definitely sound "close enough". The components and voice board circuitry are different between the two, so they are naturally going to sound somewhat different. The OB-8 is more stable sou...

Re: First encounter with a Prophet 5... slightly underwhelmed...

I played a Prophet 5 Rev 3.3 one time about 5 years ago at Two Lines Music in NY, which now ceases to exist. I really liked the sound of it at the time but this was before I finally owned and played my OB-8. Of course, having 5 voices is a major limitation if you are a chord player (which I am) so l...

Re: Why doesn’t the OB-8 get more love?

Where's WhinyLittleRunt? He's got an OB-8 and he loves it... Ha.. 3 pages in - where have I been?? Yes, I do love my OB-8. Probably the best polysynth I have ever played and most musical to my liking (style and sound). Non-Digital Tom and I have actually thought of the possibility of acquiring a Pr...

Re: pro one versus evolver (what makes the pro one so great?)

The Pro One sounds very raw compared to the Evolver, which uses DCO's as opposed to the VCO's on the P1. This is from experience; it definitely sounds punchier and can blow your speakers if you're not careful.

Re: What is the purpose of "Recapping" a synth??

Any info out there about the Oberheim OB-8 cap replacement? I have been wanting to do mine but I just want to know if there's any documentation on it before I start doing it aimlessly. BTW replacing the tantalums on the ARP Omni-2 with electrolytics was recommended because they are so much more reli...

Moog FreqBox able to be used as a 2nd VCO?

I've been testing a FreqBox over the course of the week and I figured out it could be used as a second oscillator, only I wasn't sure if it could be used with my MicroMoog. Anyone know if this is possible and how it gets patched? I'm reading the manual but it was hard to read and I got ADD trying to...

Re: ob8 volume problem

Can you isolate it to two specific voices?

I would pop the hood and see what voices light up on the loud notes and see if it's consistent. Does it do it in manual mode as well?

Minimoog Model D static-sounding pop on output

I just finished cleaning the buss bars on a mini the long and hard way (removal of the buss bars, cleaning them thoroughly with chrome polish per Kevin Lightner). The original issue I was having with the funky contacts is now gone, however, I now have a "pop" sound that is produced when a key is pre...

Wes is a great guy and got my OB-8 up to snuff when I first purchased it. Glad I found him because that thing is still kicking strong!

Re: why macbooks?

I agree about the mac hardware being pretty sub-par, but as a mac technician I think I have a right to say that. I absolutely love my macbook, and before that my mac mini and before that my G4, etc... What people never seem to take into consideration is that your $2K MacBook Pro is built and QC'd by...
