Re: Replacing cheap 12AX7a tube with....

Might be worth springing for a decent tube (or pair) since it's likely they'll last a good while. I mean all the old Mullards in my WEM are still kickin' after 30+ years and I don't see why new tube designs would be any less robust.

Depends on your definition of "wavetable".

Re: why did they stop making analog synths?

[What I didn't mention in the ESQ thread was that one the big attractions for me in buying an ESQ was "how realistic the piano sound sounded." I was right there along with everyone cheering for the sheer power of digital!] And now you know the truth! The M1's piano stomps all over it. ;) It's funny...

Re: What's the best Knob twiddling Analog synth

- cheap - lots of knobs - real analog Pick 2. Any decent enough VA will do the job for you. That's a great way to put it. I'll elaborate a bit: Option one - cheap and lots of knobs : Go VA. See KORG MS-2000, Alesis ION, Novation Station or KS series, Roland JP-8000/SH-201, older Nord Leads, Creamwa...

Would a hypersaw change your mind? ;)

Seriously though, is that 16 detuned sawtooth waves?

The Octave CAT and Polivoks both offer this capability. So does the Little Phatty if you stick a dummy jack in the CV gate in.

Don't worry about it - I was only curious. It's still a great article - especially when it's free and presented in a fancy Flash viewer like that.

I also think "Ring Modurator" is written on the PCB as well. At least, that's what's in the user manual. :P

Re: why did they stop making analog synths?

I first heard an M1 at my brother's friend's house. You'll be amused to know, I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever heard. We used to sit around the thing cursing about the stupid sequencer but marveling at how "real" the piano and saxophone sounds were! And, of course, Universe . Ah, ...

Cheers for that - an interesting read. However is that recent interview? Because if it is then the Little Phatty Stage II is hardly what I'd call a "future release".

Re: Let's clean our synths until our eyes melt in their shine

Fixed the reverb (loose wire), but need to look at the rest. To be honest, I don't think it's that bad - one or two of the sounds are a bit unsure of themselves, but sometimes a good clean is all that's needed. Dust in the switches, maybe. We'll see. A couple of new caps might do some good too. Ha,...
