You could try an ensoniq sq80 - digital waveforms, but the rest is analogue. Its easy to programme and gets a wide range of sounds, often quite harsh. Are you already a keyboard player? If so the sq80 has an unusual light touch, but is very good to play when you're used to it. Synths differ a lot in...

Yeah, you,re probably right about the virus. I,m reasonably sure its the `wow factor`synth in a lot of the D n B I hear - sounds so nasty (in a good way)
Thing is though - I can`t really afford one, as even the rack version is quite a bit more here than the JP8000 I got. :( :(

Have you tried loading the sounds from the sweetwater site? I know this is just more presets, but they do seem quite good... I'v been thinking about the K2000 and its a wierd synth really, even wierder as it suffers from that awful digital bland black + button look. If it came in lime green with Kor...

Thanks! - the thing is though my JX8P is real sick - the display's gone and I tried to use a kenton control freak (which is pre-programmed to do this) to programme it, but it won't work, So I'm left with the glorious presets. :( It spent over 6 months "being repaired", but came back just as sick. It...

Just got a JP8000

On impulse this morning - for $600 NZ - that's about 200 pounds. I guess I wouldn't have if it hadn't seemed such a bargain. And I'v sworn to sell some stuff to make room (and cash!). But I'v always wanted one - all those knobs! No holding my breath while I menu dive! All on the surface and visible....

Born in 1955 - and old enough to remember Kent State, Hendrix's death etc, but c**p if you were a teenager learning piano. That was it really. And not being able to carry a piano arround I gave up playing music for years and never knew stuff all about synths till two years ago!

I'v been using mine quite a bit lately - and had the backlight rteplaced when i got it - though I still hate craning my neck to squint into it. But that said its a joy to play and seems an easy to use sampler. I think they're pretty amazing and thanks for the tips on keeping mine alive. Old hardware...

I'v just got one of these and instantly really appreciated the keyboard - the degree of touch sensitivity and aftertouch. I'm more a keyboard player than a synthesist, so maybe this is just my bag. Also I'v got v3 and have heard the earlier key action wasn't so good. I'v got the manual beside me now...

Yeah its not fair to have favourites with your kids, else they get jealous, squabble and get noisy, which interupts the music flow.... One should treat them all equally. Same with synths in a way. I suppose I have a kind of 'can I sell this?' category. Otherwise though I'm quite aware a Kurzweil k20...

Bargain expectations

So I keep reading here about all the lucky guys who walk in the thrift shop or whatever and there's a great old synth for peanuts. Its got so bad now that I keep looking out for my turn, when I'm shopping for old books and second hand childrens shoes. What I visualize is a Roland sh09 and I don't kn...

What synths/etc did SPK use?

I'm just rediscovering this band again. I saw them in 1984 and it was one of the most violent gigs I'v been to - chainsaws, steeldrums and bandaging from previous gigs. But I'd like to know what synths and soundprocessing they used. Just out of curiosity I guess. Though I'd be interested in how they...

Probably much the same stuff in the end - but I wouldn't do silly things like gassing bigtime for a darkstar, buying a wavestation with no backlight, or an sh1000 - lots of stuff I'v sold now..... But I started out being a pianist, not knowing really anything about synthesizers, but wanting portable...
