i used a CS1x for a long time. it was also my main live axe as well.
a nice bonus on the CS1x is the little shelf on the right side for putting your favorite mini module or stomp box!

@ StepLogik: Have you used the QY-100? I've always been about equally intrigued and put off by those desktop all-in-one sound module sequence board thingies, never actually had one though. its a very good scratch-pad tool. i use it when i travel, on planes, at the coffee shop, etc. since i do old-s...

Yamaha QY-100
also, I've got one of those portable power packs i use during power outages and they are HEAVY. they might be portable but if you have a long way to walk/carry it bring a cart. Also, I suppose I should mention I'm a wuss when it comes to carrying heavy stuff around.

Re: Say you are given Alec Empire's TR-909...
its a collector's item so off to ebay it goes. i don't place any extra value on instruments used by famous artists so the profit made from the sale would be used to help treat my severe GAS.

Re: Real analogue synth from Korg: what would you buy?
I'm not really interested in a remake either. I'd rather see them do something entirely new with modern facilities. of the "big 3", it seems like a very remote possibility with Korg, since the monotron could very well be seen as "testing the waters" for marketability. they know the demand is there, ...

Re: Added value of a real Korg MS-20 over the software emula
My brief experience with software emulation things like that is neutral. The software can make some pretty nice sounds, but, it's never like the original, no matter how convincing it may be. It is, in itself, an entirely different synthesizer . But if the software has the sounds you like, great! Us...

Re: Mixers?
Another vote for the Yamaha MG series. I use a MG24/14FX and I've been quite pleased with it. For a "cheap" board, it offers a lot of value and the sound quality is pretty good. Prior to the MG, I had a Mackie 32-ch 4-bus. I loathed the hollow, fussy EQ on that board to the point of disgust so I sol...

Re: Turning your JX-3P into a pseudo-Jupiter
I would love some clever sort to make a similar mod for the AX80. It has a few shortcomings holding it back but has a lot of power inside. The problem is it's hardly as ubiquitous as the junos and JX's so I doubt anyone would want to invest time in modding it properly (to sell the mod) and get.. ma...

Re: MPC in NYT
my only beef with that article is that they really breeze over the MPC's early history. i guess the point of the article isn't to outline the history, but i think they could have put more in there than that. it basically sounds like roger linn was a shitty designer and the MPC sprang from his failed...

Re: Oberheim Xpander - "slow" envelope rectification
They are calculated in software and I'm sure the CPU is plenty busy with all those modulation sources and routings! The Xpander actually has a CPU dedicated to this function in addition to other tasks related to controlling analog guts such as background calibrations.

Synth Design - A Good Read
The Sequential Circuits Six-Trak service manual is a remarkably well-written guide to "hybrid" synthesizer design. There is a lot of good discussion, that is obviously very specific to the Six-Trak, about various issues such as tuning stability, interrupt handling, addressing, etc. Every sub-system ...
