little known cs-80(50/60 too?) secret-the later era Yamaha IG VCO chips were, according to kent spong-reknkowned cs80 tech-ROCK solid. different build or something. my 80 is ser#1418-pretty late, and it stays in tune like a champ-all those tuning nightmare stories may be true of earlier models, but...

I have had bad experiences with old analog when it is left on.
I leave it on long enough to tune and then as long as I need it. Then I turn it off.

Realistic MG-1. Two oscs, Moog filter, Ring (well, at least cross) mod, sample and hold, sync, polyphonic applications. The most bang for buck in the cheap monophonic range, to be sure.

Roland JX3P. Roland poly with two oscs. Has a much warmer sound than most 80s polys. What more do you want?

Certainly a hazy area then. :-k I think for certain things like this, ROMplers, DCOs and "true" polyphony everyone has their own argument. Probably no correct answer as such, just different ways of analysing it. All of these categorizations have a specific distinction that separates them from...

I suppose hidden in my complaint is the idea that convenience helps those with less skill and talent sound more like those with more skill and talent by taking out some of the steps that require skill and talent. . This reminds of how, supposedly, painters were very against photography at first... ...

My digital 8 track cost me less than my cassette four track and half of what I spent on an open reel 4 track setup back in the 1970s. I can splice tape if I need to but digital editing is just better, more flexible and you can undo your mistakes 8) I am totally with you, at least in practice. I use...

I would say that what designates a sampler is the ability to sample. Most samplers have editing and modifying functionality (amp, env, filt) found in synthesizers. Any instrument which uses samples but cannot sample is a ROMpler. (excluding those synthesizers which use sampled waveforms as opposed s...

but basically progressing technology will always make music creation easier. Does it make it easier to make s**t? of course, but then the real creative people will always succeed. So inversely, by going back to old technology and making it "new" people are creating their creative little niches .. (...

I don't see what the big deal is. If you find yourself liking music by some no-talent hack who cobbled it together with some loops, the go on and keep liking it! You're not going to suddenly become less of a person, artist, or musician because of it. This post-modern thinking allows us to say, "I l...

Hey, thanks for posting this.

You're right about the demos. Wow... I hope those weren't intended to actually be helpful.

It is great to see big pictures of the Spirit, too, so thanks again!
It's a shame the photographer didn't want to give us a good panel shot.

doesnt matter what you use, its what you do with it that counts. If it doesn't matter what you use, then perhaps everyone here at VSE is being foolish. Functionality and sound are no longer relevant, people! Cheap Casio knock-offs for everyone! The cruel and oppressive dictatorship of high-end equi...

I think some people have to remember the difference between composition and process. In these delightful post-modern times, process is as important, sometimes more important, than the output. Since the music is all rehash no matter what, it becomes very important to the maker (and, we wish, the lis...
