Re: New stuff from Roland!
PS: I like how in the AIRA video he says "in 1980 electronic music did not exist" Someone better call Kraftwerk and Jarre, and tell them it was all a dream. All your history are belong to us. Add Carlos and Subotnick and Eaton and Derbyshire and Stockhausen and Sala and Cage and Schaeff...

Re: Synth for great bass
In addition to that, the MicroBrute is, hands down, the least expensive, most powerful, and best-sounding analog synth. By which I hope you mean that it's the most powerful and best-sounding synth in its price range... :/ I'm sorry if it was unclear, but yes: for that price, you simply can't find a...

Re: Why do you use the Synthesizer you use most?
Because all of the sounds it makes are inspiring to me. Because I have a pleasing aesthetic experience when I use it. Because it has diverse functionality. Great. Which instrument are you talking about? Well, I worded it that way to meet the requirement of the thread title, but it can be applied to...

Re: Synth for great bass
I also suggest MicroBrute. Any synth with a resonant high pass is going to give you some serious bass. In addition to that, the MicroBrute is, hands down, the least expensive, most powerful, and best-sounding analog synth.

Re: NAMM 2014 thread of broken dreams
*crossing my fingers for a Novachord reissue  Now that is a fantastic idea. Hammond could totally make this. Transistors could be used instead of tubes keeping everything discrete, but would it sound anywhere near as good? Especially with modern SMT manufacturing it could be quite small and li...

Re: Fogeys Unite
I stand corrected about the DCOs. I was thinking about tone production in my response, which was not what was actually being talked about.

Re: Fogeys Unite
Hate to bust a bubble here, but just about any synth using digital technology is running software underneath the knobs, sliders and faders. It is software that translates the control movements into parameter changes. Same thing that plugins and DAWs do... or their REAL controller surfaces. Take the...

You'll notice, though, griffin avid, that she was still drawn to something that had a physical/tactile interface. :D I have to admit that I am a great fan of exactly one softsynth... and it's also on an iPad. :) Also: My son is a computer fanatic. He has LOADS of synthesizers on his iPhone... but th...

Re: Fogeys Unite
I suppose, unfortunately, it all comes down to what your experience is. I know a lot of people who started off with software and have no problem with it... no aesthetic problem, no conceptual problem, no interactional problem. I think you get used to the tools you use for creative expression when yo...

Re: Do you ever feel pressured to use a synth?
I struggled with modulars for a long time, thinking I really needed one and was always trying to find something to use it for. At one point I had a 44-space dotcom system worth about $5000 and was just staring at it one day wondering why I had it, so I sold it. I was just purging my computer of unu...

Re: Do you ever feel pressured to use a synth?
I used to have vintage 13 analog synths at one time. Analog synths break when you DON'T use them. As long as you turn them on and use them, they seem to last longer. As such, I felt like I needed to be using them all relatively frequently. Of course, it wasn't much of a chore... but eventually, othe...

Re: Advice for Shipping Synths
I used to ship a lot of synths. I used this recipe: Wrap the synth in several layers of large bubblewrap. Wrap that tightly in cardboard. Get or make a larger, solid box that is at least six inches larger on all sides than the box you've made. Put the smaller box in the larger box, and surround the ...
