Another microkorg vote! Previous to that I only used software synths. I was in two minds between the mK and the alesis micron - at the time I was looking for a compact/portable synth. I'm glad I went with the mK... I think I considered the x-staiton too, but I can't remember why I didn't go for that...

Other than that.... a groovebox or sampler of some description - electribe or MPC I think... and I'd add in some analogue - a MEK or an SH101 would be my pick of the bunch. Plus, I do like the idea of getting a 25 key xiosynth to go alongs...

Yamaha AN1x is definitely worth having a look out for, but if you're keen on novation synths how about taking a look at the X-Station? They do 25, 49 and 61 key versions.
