eh, i've never had one but have never been interested in them either. i'd say if you're going hardware you'll be better off learning with assigned knobs or sliders and a synth that's overall a simpler unit.

if you're looking to learn, i'd suggest going for something simple and minimalistic to start off with, like a yamaha CS-5 or CS-01. there are plenty of books out there teaching about synthesis too, just hit amazon. personally i'm more of a hardware guy, but there are all kinds of cheap/free software...

if you're looking for suggestions on what gear to get, this belongs over in the buyer's guide section. it reads more like you're doing the hardware vs. software debate, which is really just decided by personal taste...

one mic i've picked up i thought i should share a comment on - audix i5 literally seems time and a half more responsive than an SM57. side by side comparison is nuts.
