Re: Syncing multiple drum machines and synths

Hey, great video Z, what is the box you fiddle with at the end of this video to the right of the 707 and behind the moog box? Thanks. That's the Strymon TimeLine which is processing the TR-707 (except for the snare which is running through a Boss RE-20). I have it set set to "dTape" mode which emul...

Re: Make music with the millennium falcon

Yes, it came out last year and bombed so bad that they're being blown out for $100.

I got one last week and not too impressed. Running external audio through its DJ FX is fun enough to justify the $100.

No DIN MIDI :(

Re: New guy midi questions/sequencer recommendation

I don't know much about low-end (price) modern polyphonic MIDI sequencers, but the old Alesis MMT-8 is one of the easiest sequencers to use. It's laid out like a tape recorder and pretty much works the same way. You can pick one up for around $100 these days - just make sure it includes the power su...

Re: Any nice sounding Jupiter 8 demos?

As promised, here's a video of some Jupiter 8 noodling from a couple of years ago. It starts off with JP-8 in WHOLE mode (standard 8 voice mono-timbral) running through Strymon BigSky reverb pedal. Next, I add the TR-808 & TB-303 and put the JP-8 in DUAL mode and have the UPPER and LOWER parts hard-...

Re: Any nice sounding Jupiter 8 demos?

I don't much care about the cross mod and OSC detuning. For me it's important to understand where it really shines, leads, basses, pads? the bare tone, is it musical, what's the character of this synth!? splitting or layering 2 patches on the synth,it is smth that I can do with my CS70, and I'd like ...

Re: Any nice sounding Jupiter 8 demos?

I'd like to understand what it is famous for, its strong sides. If I get it, I'd like to let go my JU 60\106 stack, coz I don't like to have many synths. Mostly I use 60 as a bass synth and 106 as a pad, synth sounds synth. So I'd like to understand, can I have the same and better from the JP8? OK, ...

Re: Any nice sounding Jupiter 8 demos?

What would you like to see in a Jupiter 8 demo. I'm not sure when I can find the time to make a demo, but it is on my list. The Jupiter is is prominent on Howard Jones' Human's Lib album (I had HoJo sign an endbell on my JP-8). In fact, search on YouTube for Howard Jones' "Like To Get To Know You We...

Re: Analog Drum Machines

WHAT?!?!? The Elektron MachineDrum is one of the best drum machines ever made. It's the one that started the "parameter lock" feature on drum machines. It has several different "machines" or "synth engines" that can be selected to create drum sounds. Elektron recently discontinued the MachineDrum an...

Re: Analog Drum Machines

Other than the Arturia DrumBrute, the "alternatives" you listed are all digital. In that case, check out used Elektron MachineDrum or Even the Sonic Potions LXR.

Re: what synth? old rave bass noise...

I'm pretty sure that bass sound is made on an FM synth - probably a cheaper one (at that time) like a DX100. It may even be a preset on the DX100.

Re: Need help with vintage synths please!

I started composing with synthesizers in the late 80s. Before getting an Alesis MMT-8 MIDI sequencer, I would just play & record live to cassette: program a pattern on a drum machine, run a trigger out from the drum machine to the arpeggiator input on my Akai AX60. Soon after, I got a 4 track casset...

Can you input a MIDI poly sequence into an MSQ-100 via Step-Entry?
I'm pretty sure you can input chords in step mode. You can download the manual for free at www.RolandUS.com

You might also consider the Arturia KeyStep.

Re: Dedicated Juno 106 Sequencer?

I've never used the JSQ-60 or the MSQ-100. I owned a MSQ-700 briefly in the early 90s just to convert MIDI to DIN sync for my TR-808. I did use the MSQ-700 a few times as a sequencer, but found it very frustrating to use compared to the Alesis MMT-8 that mainly used for sequencing at that time (stil...
