Yup, I agree. I think the worst years for synths started in 88, and went until about 1994
Except for the Roland JD-800 in '91 (990 in '93) and Korg Wavestation in '90.

Happy Birthday, BG!

I was born in '71, so according to the VSE timeline, the ARP 2600 Grey Meanie (Phil @ CMS is working on mine) and the EMS Synthi A & AKS were also born.

The MKB-200 came out over a decade before USB. A MIDI controller is exactly what the word is, be it a keyboard, guitar, drum pad, wind instrument, etc, to "control" other MIDI instruments. The reason why there is no MIDI IN, is that there is no sound souce - nothing to receive the MIDI information. ...

There is a company out of Canada that sells replacement backlights for the Roland D-50/D-550, Korg Wavestation, Yamaha TG77 and others. I don't reember their name, but I see them for sale on eBay all the time. I have a D-550 & WS A/D whose backlights have gone out, but I'm in no hurry to replace the...

I had the Kenton MIDI kit installed in my 808 back in the early 90's. I was quite happy with it. You can maps out the drum sounds on different MIDI note numbers and respond to velocity.

You can download the manual at Akaipro.com
http://www.akaipro.com/mpc1000#

I D/L'd the MPC5000 manual the other day. I've been reading up on it. I think I'm going to get one at the end of the month when they come out.

How about Roland JX-8p / JX-10 / MKS-70 or Alpha Juno 2 / MKS-50?

I think the Super JX route would be a good choice since the Xmod certainly helps with the piano timbres.

I'd have to say my JD-800. Even though I only use a handful of sounds from it - it's pretty much my "go to" synth when I start to write or mess around. It is a perfect balance of digital and (psedo)analog with a slider for every parameter.

So the Drumstation is digital? So pretty good for digital then, but maybe it won't be as alive and punchy as the other 2. I've owned a real 808 for nearly 20 years and a 909 in the late 80's/early 90's. I picked up a DrumStation last year and I have to say that it has the best emulations of these i...
