Re: Keyboards and synthesizers in Progressive Rock
Rick Wakemans work is solely responsible for my desire to play keys. I went out and bought a Hammond organ three weeks after I first heard the song, "Close To The Edge", and I never looked back. Many of my faves have already been mentioned, so I'll give a vote to Rick Van Der Linden (solo), Ekseptio...

Z, I think you would be able to appreciate Fumitaka Anzai. He's definitely worth a look. Others might include, -Isao Tomita -Phillip Glass -Danny Elfman -Brian Eno -John Williams -Hans Zimmer -James Newton Howard -Electric Light Orchestra They're all worth a look, actually. I will try to to think of...

Re: Korg synthesizers
I would probably take the DW-8000 if it was going to be my only synth. If you were considering the DW, I would look into the DSS-1. I'm finding myself wanting one more and more by the day.
Anyone want to trade a DSS-1 for a DW-6000?

Re: Favorite "dirty" synth?
I have secret weapon 1950s tube preamp that I use as a companion to my Micromoog. When the Moog starts to interact with the tubes, things can get very ugly, (or beautiful as the case may be). The pre. has 12db low/high pass filters which allow you to hone in on the sweet spot without changing anythi...

It would be nice if they started selling oscillator modules in the 5U format.

I wouldn't get either. I'd get an MS2000 or Radias.

Man, maybe I shouldn't have thanked you for the link. Considering how much time i've spent over there today, you may get me fired! Very interesting stuff! But at least it doesn't look like such a distant future if you look at starting bare bones. And I wanted to build the kits anyway (for my own ed...

Re: Korg M1 Vs. Roland D-50
Alot of people seem to like the DX7. It is lovable because the sounds are so cheap til they're catchy, but honestly there aren't that many sounds from it that I'm feelin'. I say that the M1 is better than the DX7 and the D-50 may be better than both. If you are talking about the pleasantness of the...

Re: Korg M1 Vs. Roland D-50
Well, it's not really the sound of the DX7 that gets me going, it's the synthesis. I would much prefer a DX5 or TX816. Truth is, although I am experienced in programming FM, I never even owned a DX7. I do have a DX21 and I must say, it's a load of fun! It was given to me because it would not make a ...

Re: Korg M1 Vs. Roland D-50
Owned both. The D-50, I once had four of. I slowly sold them all and regret it. Bad times. I can easily say though, that the (hardware) D-50 is untouchable. I never used mine in a traditional way, though. If you own a D-50, you owe it to yourself to program your own sounds. I felt the M1 however, wa...

Re: Led Zeppelin In the Light Synth Tone
I don't know whether he used a Synthacon or not. It would be the first I've heard of this. It would make sense though, because he could have used the VCS3 for the drone and the Synthacon for the ascending scale. If you listen closely to the track, you'll notice the two tones are fairly different in ...

Re: Led Zeppelin In the Light Synth Tone
I've actually been able to do a very good copy of that lead with my Micromoog, a tube overdrive, delay, and a spring reverb. If ever there was a song that makes me want a VCS3, it's that one. The GX-1 first appeared on In Through The Out Door. It's my favorite album by Zep. Would've been interesting...
