Re: What We Talk About When We Talk About Synths

There is a lot of holy-grail BS flying around all the time. I am amazed at people claiming the Voyager, LP and DSI synths "sound digital". How can they not sound analog when they are analog? I'd guess this is partly due to uninformed deduction. For instance, The Alesis Andromeda, DSI synths and the...

Re: What We Talk About When We Talk About Synths

The thing about synths is that due to their innate flexibility, it almost seems absurd that anyone would want one only for a handful of ideal sounds. Sounds they have likely already heard repeatedly and wish to exploit for themselves. They want that sound and They want it now!!! The flip-side of thi...

Re: Virus TI such a big deal

I always thought the reason the Virus C and beyond got so much flack was because the feature creep in each new model couldn't justify the price. Limiting the TI to the subset of features in the Virus b and comparing them, the TI sounds almost exactly the same except with more precise D/A. I never co...

Re: Minimoog s/n question

Early 'RA Moog' badge ones have all matched-pair transistors in the filter ladder, much like the MF101 and Voyager filter, so are cleaner and more stable than all after, which only have input and output matched pairs. The last revision models have more stable-tuned oscillators, and are generally con...

Re: Minimoog Voyager buzzing

I'd wager there's an internal ground potential problem in the headphone amp. When I owned a Voyager, it arrived with a very distorted sounding headphone output, so it's possible this is a dodgy circuit or doesn't get QA checked at Asheville. You might see if they will let you ship it there and fix i...

Re: Yamaha CS 15 vs Waldorf Pulse

Agreed ^^^^ on finding sweet spots being a challenge with the CS-15. I modified my CS-15 to make the channels switchable to serial, which makes it even tougher to dial in a good sound, but once you do, dayum it's righteous. Like a single Virus voice, only bigger and fuller. The CS-15 filters will no...

Re: Your Rig---but 20 Years Ago

erm, 20 years ago I was 19 in Air Force basic training, so I didn't own jack s**t for years.
14 years ago I had a Korg X5 rompler, an Akai S2800 sampler and Atari 1040st running Cubase.

Re: Juno60vsJupiter8

Take this for what you will, but it always bugged me that the Juno and Jupiter were nearly the same size, yet the Juno is so much more limited. It always bugged me , anyway. Someone was talking about how much warmer and more pleasant the JP8 and Juno 6/60 sound than other Roland polysynths with the ...

Re: supernova 2 v virus a

They are both quite capable VA's, despite their early generation in VA lineage, so it becomes more subjective in what sounds you are liking from each. The Novation will have more features, so that's what I would choose.

Re: sampling from vinyl into a mixing board- ground wire...?

Get an audio-technica PEQ3 before they get too hard to find. The only drawback is they have a ridiculously long burn-in time, so if you get one, just do some mad vinyl listening for a few days.

Re: Juno60vsJupiter8

I think what he means is that the convenience of presets is at least somewhat diminished by the utter simplicity in the interface, when programming the Juno 6/60.

Re: virus B or C

C is just an upgrade from b, retaining all previous features while adding new ones, much in the same vein as a software upgrade, with a few hardware additions. Some feature upgrades from b to C include: Up to 8 more voices, a much expanded ROM preset bank, more knobs for controlling LFO's and effect...

Re: Arturia Oberheim SEM V

Support The Little Guy. Arturia needs to go down in flames for re-using the same tweaked software modules over and over with different classic synth labels on them and adding flashy GUI features no one cares about.

Re: Sonicproject OP-X PRO II

I finally took the plunge and upgraded from OP-X to OP-X Pro II 1.1, as they have a sale until the end of the year . I'm very glad I did! More voices is always a plus. I'm finding the CC Learn mode was a benefit for my current setup and the morphed filtering modes are great! As always, it's the clos...

Re: Why is the 303 the de-facto Acid synth?

I remember when the Prophecy first came out, being VA and having that onboard distortion. It wasn't until then that I realized the real oddball on the 303 was that hybrid square wave.
