Re: Juno60vsJupiter8

Wait, didn't the OP already acknowledge he had a 106 and the differences with the JP8 were worth saving up for? The problem with the JP8 is not just the ever increasing demand or its uniqueness, but its scarcity. Not that many of them to go around. Part of the reason I sold mine was because it was j...

Re: Mini Korg 700S

I sold mine at what I thought was a generous price of $400. So perhaps go with $600? There's a For Sale section in this forum if you want to have a go here.

Re: Why is the 303 the de-facto Acid synth?

Could also be something to do with the unusual 18db/Oct filter. I always have a small niggle when this gets mentioned. The design is supposed to be 4 pole, but none of the transistors are matched pairs, so the initial slope is usually gentler than a typical 4 pole slope, giving it more of a mid-ran...

Re: Why is the 303 the de-facto Acid synth?

Besides starting the whole Acid House craze, I believe it to be the unique and unmistakable character of the 303 when heard, without distortion or spectral modulation effects. It's not hard to tell between a normal synth and at least a good 303 clone that tries to use similar circuitry. The design i...

Re: Vintage synth prices

I like using an inflation calculator to determine what those really cost in today's dollars. It's no longer fun though when you also count in the original selling price of vintage sample playback systems and compare them to the modern day equivalent. Then the truth is revealed: An ever increasing n...

Re: turntable recommendations

VTF gauge reads 1.6g. P-Mount standard is 1g - 1.5g. I've only heard it on some used records, so it's possible there was already damage on them when bought. There are no alignment adjustments of any sort for P-Mount, as the whole point of that design was to do away with them. The cheaper Audio-Techn...

Re: turntable recommendations

I've used a Technics SL-DD33 for 24 years and as long as you keep it level, it has never given me problems. For being full auto and using P-Mount cartridges, they can still be found for less than $100 if you get the right seller and no crazy, desperate bidders. There's also a quartz drive SL-QD33, b...

Re: Looking for Roland Jupiter 6 demos

In my experience, vintage analog synths don't sound any different than any other subtractive synth that has ever been released in the past 40 years. And this is how people who buy OB-12's rationalize their purchase and then tell everyone, who couldn't be the least bit interested because this is a t...

Re: Little Synthesizer Expander Modules (ie Extra VCO's)

I'm using my Oberheim SEM as an expander module with my modded SH-101, in a manner very similar to how you describe. This 101 has a audio input to filter and filter CV, so I send the SEM filter out to the 101 audio in, and SEM envelope 2 out to the 101 filter CV in, after it goes through an attenuat...

Direct link for my now infamous(on VSE anyway) Jupiter 6 demo:

It's edits from 2 separate sessions. Mad fun the JP6. I could imagine losing many an hour with one.

Re: What is with all the Russian synths

Polivoks can do nice, especially the later manufactured models, if one keeps the pre-filter mix and resonance down,(and try to avoid the square wave) but that's hardly any fun when you can get better results from something else. Here are some not-so-nasty but not exactly nice examples: http://67.18....

Re: first HW synth - SH-101 or Dark Energy or...

Another vote against SH-101 here. I bought mine for $200 in 1999, and I didn't even really get to like it until I modded it. Kinda thin with resonance up without modding it to include a triangle waveform to the mixer. Dark Energy or one of the MFB synths, definitely. I have my Kraftzwerg permanently...

Re: Arpeggiators and MIDI

I found some rewarding results by recording a arpeggio performance from the Virus via Midi notes into the DAW, then playing that back to the Virus again with a different, slightly more complex arpeggio template that started off-time from the original one. Midi clock sync was naturally used on both. ...

Re: Yamaha CS-10 problems

Finding open circuits doesn't require power to be on: Just use an ohm meter from the cable tip to the first component in the circuit, then repeat for each trace between components until you get to the pre-filter mixer input. If everything checks out, you move on to applying a signal to the External ...
