Re: Question about synths - John Foxx 1983-1985 albums

Yep, an Odyssey. I though at first it might be an Axxe, but I see that the only version of the Axxe that had three PPC pads was the orange-and-black version.

Re: Utterly boring question about shipping a sexy Prophet 6.

As far as the shipping, the best way would be to buy a hard case for it. Of course, that would eat into the theoretical savings. The second best way would be the factory packaging. I'm not sure I would trust that to airline baggage handlers, for any of several reasons.

Re: Were analog computers the real ancestors of synthesizers

The same can be said of analog television, or pretty much any raster-scanning display device. Which leads one to wonder: which came first, the oscilloscope or the television?

Re: Were analog computers the real ancestors of synthesizers

I've never heard where any of the synth pioneers ever said specifically that analog computers were an influence on their concepts or designs. Bob Moog probably would have been exposed to analog computers at Cornell, and I can see where his early concepts for modular synth user interfaces and signal ...

Re: Triangle core VCOs

The 3340 is triangle core? Did not know that. I'm learning all kinds of things this week.

Now I'm wanting to dig into the OSCar's schematics, if I can find them. Unusual oscillator designs fascinate me for some reason. I did a writeup previously on the Korg Poly-800.

Re: Hammond S6 mods?

Have to admit I had never heard of the Hammond S6 before I saw this post. I'm curious about how that chord matrix works. I wonder if it would be possible to MIDIfy it.

Triangle core VCOs

A thought occurred to me: Other than modulars, can anyone think of any synths that used triangle core VCOs? I seem to recall that the OSCar did; I can't think of any others. Were any of the Curtis or SSM VCOs triangle core?

Holy c**p, $250 was a lot of money in 1963. You could buy a used car for that. :o

Nope. That's the DJ/producer Sasha. Works with John Digweed a lot, or at least he used to (all the Northern Exposure albums).

Re: Poly-61 arpeggiator locks up when when latched using mid

I just thought of something else... you say you are using a Yamaha keyboard as a controller. Which one? Some old Yamaha gear does note-off by sending Note On messages with a velocity of 0. Although the MIDI standard permits this, a lot of older gear didn't implement it properly.

Re: Poly-61 arpeggiator locks up when when latched using mid

It sounds like the Korg is not seeing all of the Note Off messages. Two questions: (1) Does your external MIDI controller have a "panic button", or some other way to send an All Notes Off message? If so, does that straighten out the arpeggiator when you send it? (2) If you turn off the Korg's arpegg...

Re: Best synth basslines of all time?

Something a little different... Synergy, "Phobos and Deimos Go To Mars". Bassline played by Peter Sobel on Russ Hamm's prototype guitar synth. IIRC they had it set up driving a Micromoog.

Last I checked the Oberheim Matrix 6/6R/1000 were still pretty cheap. But if you want knobs, those won't fill the bill.

Re: Why does the Roland Synth Plus series exist?

Actually what's an even bigger mystery is the Juno-106S. Exact same thing as the HS-60 (Juno-106 w/speakers)... Yeah, I always thought that was strange too. IIRC the 106S is in a standard 106 case with the ends of the panel cut out to accommodate the speakers. The HS-60 of course is in a different ...

Re: Unusual Electronic Sound in Vintage Recording..

I think it's a Lowrey or Thomas organ. It sounds like the tape was slowed down and sped up, and then the output of that went through either a Leslie or maybe a guitar amp with tremolo.
