Re: Novachord #346 Inspection & Initial Wakeup
Does it seem odd to anyone that such an old piece of musical equipment - one that is a rare, unique and historical - should be worth so little by people today? Especially when Moogs and ARP stuff is worth so much. Granted it may have to do with the fact that it will need to be fully restored to be ...

LaCie Rugged. I think they make 320GB & 500GB models, 7200 RPM. FW 400/800 and USB 2. Compact. And they look cool as s**t.

Re: LRF Support for the MiniMoog
Most electronic supply houses should carry black rubber feet. I recommend the screw-type rather than sticky ones. Try Mouser.com, Jameco.com, or a local music or stereo dealer if you're not particular. I think I have about 3 generic sets that are sitting in a drawer. If you'd like, PM me and I can s...

That's the "calculated risk" I was mentioning. He could either be in danger of becoming his own tribute band, or it could be the best show ever--only the concert itself will tell.

Re: Evolve or stick to it
I saw Howard Jones in '86 (mime & all), the drummer had a set of Simmons pads, HJ had a mountain of synths, and it was a great show. Fast forward to about 10 years ago, and I see him again--only this time, it's just him (with a much different look) playing a single controller, and a guy with an acou...

As far as the classic Peter Frampton sound, this is what you want: http://www.jimdunlop.com/index.php?page=products/pip&id=287 Indeed! And Heil even lives in my neighborhood. Go Bob! I met him back in the mid -'70s. A pretty unassuming guy, considering how many innovations he brought to sound reinf...

Re: whats DAT all about
I think the most relevant point of the computer age is: We've created all of this incredible technology which is capable of such amazing feats... Why the f**k haven't we come up with a safe, reliable, lossless, PERMANENT way to store it? It's like getting laid--you're in such a rush to get there, y...

Re: whats DAT all about
just on the DVD archiving thing, i've seen toshiba discs with 24 carat gold data-things that are supposed to last about 70 years. Have they used a time machine to test them? :) Some manufacturers use artificial techniques to simulate advanced aging, but yeah, I'm with you--nothing like the real thi...

Re: MELLOTRON IS BACK!
"Smoke and dust could very quickly foul the playback heads and damage the tapes of the old Mellotron and Novatron machines. The new M4000 eliminates these problems through the implementation of its unique Filtron air filtration system and a gently pressurized cabinet, which prevents the ingestion o...

Re: whats DAT all about
so 44.1khz pcm wavs are good for masters and archiving? i used to think my dat at 48khz sounded fantastic! 48K works primarily because it's more of an equal multiple (48, 96, 192, etc), and you don't need to gearbox it to a funky sample rate like 44.1 (for Audio CD) or 88.2 (for ???-just because?)....

Re: whats DAT all about
That's the best advice I've seen yet on this thread. Every DAT tape I care about has been transferred to CD-R and DVD-R. Better chance of survival. I've also had much better luck backing up finished tracks as .wav rather than .cda. No problems yet with accessing a Wave file, but I've lost more than ...

Moving parts = Headaches. Microscopic moving parts=Extreme Headaches. Keep in mind, however, that a magnetic platter spinning at 5400 to 10K rpms over long periods of time, writing and reading a dye-based substrate of varying microns of thickness isn't exactly an optimal situation either...
