Re: When recording synths...
it's hard to put it into words but I feel my overall mixes lack that almost-in-your-face quality and depth that modern recordings have, and I don'tbjust mean commercial releases. It's a bit like the difference between 90s CDs and their remastered equivalents, if you like. This comparison has actuall...

As I have no need for Ableton Live (I even had to google it to see what it does), you have just shattered my dreams of becoming a producer...ninja6485 wrote:Nowdays it means someone who owns Ableton Live and has a couple of songs up on soundcloud.

Re: When recording synths...
Nothing fancy. Just sampler and rompler stuff (Fantom X8, JV-1080 and S5000) plus guitars.tomorrowstops wrote:What synths are you specifically recording?

When recording synths...
... do you put anything between the synth and the mixer? Preamp? Compressor? Anything else? What do you use to make your recordings 'warmer' or to colour their sound? Where in the recording chain / process do you use them? What are your typical settings? Just wondering. I find my recordings sound du...

Re: Saying it's live with a laptop next ....
I don't mind 'some' pre-recorded material but only within reason. For example, if a band hasn't got a drummer or a drum machine is part of their sound, that's fine. If a major artist performs a live virtual duet alongside pre-recorded audio and/or video footage of the other singer, I'm OK with that ...

Another dead serious stupid noob question
This one's about the use of turntables in live performances. I get the whole studio thing, i.e. sampling riffs off old vinyl records into an MPC or whatever device and adding beats to them, etc. but, when those artists perform live, what the heck do they do with those turntables on stage? Inaudible ...

Re: Dead serious stupid noob DJ-ing question...
You've probably seen this before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDimzeitynE No, I hadn't but it did make me chuckle. So, basically, the whole performance is pre-recorded into a laptop or whatever and DJs turn the music down with a fader for a few seconds every now and then for that crowd singing ...

I always thought the sync synth solo on "Run Like h**l" (Prophet 5?) reminded me of something Billy Currie could have played.ronP wrote:Regarding one of the solos on "Dogs" . . . that second sounds exactly as if Billy Currie guests using his own ARP.

Dead serious stupid noob DJ-ing question...
Hi! I was born 20 years after Sgt Pepper taught the band to play so I'm of the generation for whom a DJ was the guy who played vinyl records in their commercial single or maxi-single form and faded from one to the next using a simple two-turntable plus mixer system. And I haven't set foot in a night...

Re: RIP Richard Wright
to me Richard Wright was a true synth GOD. His synth tracks all ways complemented the song, rather that say showing off in true Jordan Rudes I agree. To me, it was as a pianist that he really shone but I still love his Farfisa, Hammond and synth textures. Somehow, I always feel there is a lot going...

The new album 'The Endless River' is dedicated to Rick Wright's memory and features many performances by him.
Re: snare ID
That was probably sampled from somebody else's track and it's a real snare drum. It sounds a bit like John Bonham's snare drum on several Led Zeppelin tracks. Otherwise, I am sure the Dynamic Drums expansion card in my Fantom has a similar sound (I know Run DMC couldn't have used one in 1986 by the ...

Re: Yamaha DX9 - Sysex broken?
Just a thought. I seem to remember having to enable system exclusive on my long gone DX7 every time I wanted to use it. Isn't there a similar function on the DX9. I think it defaults to OFF every time you turn the synth on. But then I could be wrong...

I don't know whether the sounds are presets but you definitely captured the sounds of that decade (and I'm old enough to remember all of it!) Nice demo, thanks for sharing!
