Re: What is the Oldest Piece of Gear in Your Studio?
No valves or wood but it must be my DX7 mark 1 and TX7 (1983), followed by my MIDI cables. I have used the same cables since I got into MIDI seriously back in 1987 and haven't bought one since!

Re: Question for E-MU Ultra owners
Interesting! Thanks for all the input, fellas. What version of EOS are you running, Gilles? I read in a review (Harmony Central I believe) that version 4.7 (?) fixed that issue? I can only run 3.00b unfortunately because I haven't got enough Flash RAM to run a higher version of EOS. The problem wit...

Re: Question for E-MU Ultra owners
I read somewhere the issue with the filters is the resonance isn't modifiable in real-time - it's static from note-on. Not a huge limitation I would say. Yes, you're right. I have just repeated the aforementioned test on the E4K, assigning a MIDI controller to filter resonance. It only changed when...

Re: 80s conga sounds
Hmmm... I'd say Linn or Fairlight CMI, personally... If it's the sound I'm thinking about, it's also all over "Drive" by the Cars if you listen carefully.Harlem Nights wrote:I spotted this sound too in tracks like Pet Shop Boys / West End Girls and Phyllis Nelson / I like you

What 80s songs can the EII's Marcato Strings be heard on?
Following on from the DX7 Tubular Bells thread, I have been looking for examples of the Emulator II's Marcato Strings in my music collection but I am not sure I can actually identify it. Does anybody know of any 80s hits that used that particular sound?

Re: Question for E-MU Ultra owners
OK, I have an E4K, the keyboard version of the EIV "Classic", which is inferior to an "Ultra". First of all, using the E-mu's 'Cords' - their version of a modulation matrix - you can assign a MIDI controller such as one of the sliders on the front panel to filter frequency, resonance, sample start p...

Re: yamaha tx7 sysex setup?
1. Turn off memory protection: Shift Load/Prot (keep pressing until you reach the MEM PROTECT ON screen) Click NO button to set protection to OFF 2. For some reason, my TX7 doesn't always receive sysex when not set to MIDI channel 1: Shift Mode (keep pressing until you reach the MIDI RCV.CH. screen)...

Re: What was the cheapest Synth you ever bought?
I mentioned my £27 DX7 mark 1 but forgot about my £20 Korg EX800 from a car boot sale many years ago. I kept it for a couple of years and sold it for the same price. It is the cheapest synth I've ever bought but although it was in mint condition, it was probably worth that price anyway!

My Akai S2800i does not see much action these days. I tend to go straight to the S1000.

Re: Reversed key color synths
bass keys on most high-level Hammonds... If you are referring to the B3/C3, they are Hammond's version of presets, not playable keys as such. In addition to drawbars, many Hammond tonewheel organ models also include presets, which allow defined drawbar combinations to be made available at the press...

Re: Basic MIDI Help
Am I right in thinking it should be MIDI OUT from PC to MIDI IN on Drum Machine, then MIDI THRU on DM to MIDI IN on synth, finally MIDI OUT on Synth to MIDI IN on Computer? (The JP-8000 doesn't have a MIDI THRU). Yamaha keyboard OUT --> Computer IN Computer OUT --> Yamaha keyboard IN Yamaha Keyboar...

Re: Lead Synth on A-Ha's Take on Me?
If you listen carefully to the lead line, it is made up of two sounds. The first has a short decay and is an octave lower than the second, which has a longer release. This suggests three possibilities: 1. 2-synth layering. DX7 and what else? Did their Prophet 5 have MIDI? 2. Jupiter 8 in dual mode 3...
