Re: Ridiculous eBay 'Buy-it-now' and starting bids.

160508467101 This once seems kind of absurd, considering that right now there's one for $575 and another for $650. BIN is $1750. That's ridiculous all right. No flash RAM, no SCSI, no extras at all. The guy is out of his gourd. I had the opportunity to snatch one for $400 this summer, but I...

Re: Yamaha standalone FM synth vs PLG150-DX

TG77's are going for around $200. For that you get:

6 operators per voice, up to four voices per patch
loopable multi-stage EGs
16 part multi-timbral
16 waveforms (instead of just sine)
really nice digital 24db digital filters with resonance

Re: Yamaha Motif ES Electric Piano Patch

Not really, imo, unless you shell out a bunch for the Korg SV-1. If I were you, I'd pick up a used Motif Classic or ES (either keyboard or rackmount). They both use the same samples, but the ES has more plus the MIDI timing is improved.

Re: Yamaha Motif ES Electric Piano Patch

No. It's because the samples are really good in the ES. Even better in the XS. And even better in the XF. Yamaha finally got around to making good, non-DX7 electric piano sounds starting with the Motif series.

Love it. It's a freaky little bastard. I agree that the sequencer/arp/LFOs are it's strong point. You can have endless fun with those.

Re: Yamaha DX7 vs. DX11 Key Action

SY77 and SY99 have the DX7 action. SY99 can act as a master controller in some regards (limited, but it has some master controller functions).

Re: Great examples of synth bass, and tips on how to achieve

Side note: The Enigma track inspired me to put a mono synth bass track into stereo (using the Voxengo free plug-in I linked above) that wasn't sitting right in the mix. Now it sounds great and really makes an impression when it comes in. Thanks, Enigma! ;)

Re: USB-Drives and SCSI?

The USB protocol utilizes a computer's CPU, which means it needs drivers. Therefor, you cannot use USB with a piece of gear that's not designed for it unless you can modify the OS. In other words, you can't use a USB to SCSI adapter on a synth.

Re: Great examples of synth bass, and tips on how to achieve

Sounds analog to me with some sort of stereo processing done. I sometime use this plug-in to gain width and separate certain parts from the rest of the mix: http://www.voxengo.com/product/stereotouch/ Otherwise, general rule of thumb for bass is to start with a really good source, like a nice monoph...

Re: A&H zed r16 vs. zed 428

What about the Presonus StudioLive?

The EQ on the N12 is very nice, btw as are the Sweet Spot compressors on channels 1 through 8. I used them on a Mopho track last night, compressing it pretty heavily to make it more aggressive. Worked like a charm.

Re: Aggressive synths?

DSI Mopho or Tetra... +1 on Yamaha DX7, especially mkI... I've been debating buying a couple mophos and having in a midi chain, have the same patches with different tunings and see what kind of power I can get...$800 (or less) gets some crazy analog power... You can have have 4 mophos in the form o...

Re: Info on Yamaha EX-7

www.ex5tech.com Pretty much all you need to know. I own an EX7 and an EX5r (with the flash RAM, expanded regular RAM, SCSI, and a custom 3.5" card reader that works off the SCSI bus so sample loading/saving isn't so painfully slow). They are extremely frustrating synths in many ways, but I will neve...

Re: A&H zed r16 vs. zed 428

I just bought the Yamaha N12 mainly because I've been a Cubase user for almost 10 years now and the integration is awesome. I literally just hooked it up last night, tracked some stuff through it. It's really sweet and takes the place of my ginormous Soundtracs Topaz 32 channel board. The step up in...
