Re: stone age methods today
The truth of the matter is that we literally have at our fingertips more music-making potential than anyone could've imagined even a decade ago. The software apps were fairly well-developed a decade ago already. Despite the computers then having less computing power and memory in general, I don't t...

Re: Some fun synth spotting in this picture, check it out
I don't see that much gear that would suit movie scoring or sound design. Usually those people have a piano, romplers, a DAW-based setup etc. Having tons of VAs and analogs certainly wouldn't be the optimal choice. I suppose this person has always had a large setup and hasn't necessarily sold anythi...

What Minimoog? I can't spot a Minimoog there, unless by an "old Minimoog" you mean that Voyager there.
Are those Technosaurus Microcon synths at the bottom at the back? Below the MFB gear.

Re: Some fun synth spotting in this picture, check it out
Holy f**k exaggerated allowance money. I don't see a Voyager rack in the picture. I'm not really envious of most of those synths there - sans maybe for the Chroma and the Prophet on the foreground - but I'd definitely like to get my hands on some of those effects. Especially the Maestro stuff. Mind ...

What EQ are you using? I've tried some freeware ones that have had a resonant / plasticky quality to them. Perhaps the same applies to the early commerical ones - TC Electronics springs to mind - when used heavily. I think this sounds somewhat alarming though: i generally boost to find the main part...

Re: analog delay comparison
BBDs certainly stretch the line between digital and analog. The way they work is entirely different from tape delays and those are probably the only "true" analog delay devices. Curiously enough, what we call now "analog delays" were always called that. I don't know why exactly, but the early digita...

Re: analog delay comparison
So if I shout in my room and the sound bounces from wall to wall it means the room is digital?

Re: analog delay comparison
I can do the Pearl F605 Electro Echo and Dynacord Echocord tape delay (I'd probably have to chance the tape first though).

Re: stone age methods today
I use leafDrums , a decade-old, non-VSTi software drum machine. I still have most of the standalone, non-DAW -based stuff I installed in 1999 on my current setup and use them rather regularly. I also use the very earliest of DAW plug-ins, like the Cakewalk Pro Audio FX and the Blueline ones all the ...

Re: Should I get an analog mixer? If so, which one?
Plus when you get tired of traditional synthesis you can feed back the mixer channels into themselves and play the mixer as a standalone instrument. I know a guy who, despite owning a number of vintage synths, now performs live primarily with a mixer and circuit bent 707. Oh, I know hundreds of suc...

Re: Poll: What's your favorite 2-pole, -12db/oct. filter?
Here's my dilemma: I'd like to add the Polivoks filter to the list, but (a), I'd have to reset all 44 existing votes, and (b) I'd have to delete an item from the existing list, as the poll function only allows 10 candidates. I guess votes for any other types could be just typed manually and posted ...

Re: Yamaha DX-21 / Rhodes?
Your best bet for recreating a good rhodes sound would be a Rhodest VSTi emulation. There's one distributed by Native Instruments for example. If you're feeling cheap you can try: Download this: http://learjeff.net/sf/jRhodes3.sfArk.zip Open the sfArk -zip it with this: http://www.melodymachine.com/...

Re: Should I get an analog mixer? If so, which one?
I think even if I went all in the box, I'd still keep an analogue mixer around for that sweet, sweet distortion you get by overdriving the channel. Better sounding and less noisy than any distortion pedal I've tried. Depends on the model / preamps. For me a mixer is a necessity. Not least because I...

Re: Poll: What's your favorite 2-pole, -12db/oct. filter?
I'm not sure if the filter in the last batch of Yamaha analog synths is exactly the same as in the earlier ones. It's perhaps a bit funny that the CS-m models are so often left out of these polls, though. I think the basic sound on them is sturdier than on the earlier ones.

Re: ABBA-synth???
To be honest, on second listen it does sound like a string synth. Just didn't think a band that successful would use one for such a part, and the sound quality on youtube tends to make just about any high-pitched synth sounds sound like a string synth. I have an SK-20 and I think it simply sounds li...
