Re: Roland SH01
I sort of liked the hipass pad there, but the rest of the sounds in that demo, meh.

Re: Help with synth spotting (Gus Gus)
I think that synth might need some delay to get the most out of it.

Re: So long Voyager Old School
I too find the number surprisingly low. As far as I know, the number of sold units for the RME should be a lot higher.
Yeah, the 2-Pole filter is where it's at for the 1970s territory.

Re: Why hasn't the TR 606 gained the notoriety/value of 808/
I remember when I first got samples of 606 hits sometime in the 90s, all I could think was "what a useless snare". In retrospect it's a cool sound of course, but on many tracks it just doesn't really fit the mix. The Smashing Pumpkins track is an example of that. It just sounds like one of those tra...

Re: What makes a good synth player?
It would almost seem like the Jupiter 8 was used as more of a prop or novelty than for actual musical enhancement. I feel like an MS 20 or other monosynth would have been better used for that tune. I wonder if that's her personal board... Apparently she handled the purchase herself, so she must hav...

Re: What makes a good synth player?
There is a difference between a good all-around keyboard player and a synth player. For the latter, I'd associate the ability to pay attention to the tone of the sound being used and applying that to musical forms. There are some videos on youtube where classically trained folks try to play classica...

Re: MG-1 VS rogue?
I don't have a problem with people adding delay / reverb on their synth demos. That's how I would be using them myself most of the time anyway. A good demo can have a mix of wet / dry -examples. [edit: I just watched the clip on the first post and that guy's taste in reverberation effects just sucks.]

Re: Your thoughts about rompler synthesis
I've yet to find a really, really great Mellotron sample outside of a few of the ones on the JV's 60's and 70's ROM board. I guess a Mellotron version of a Mellotron is too far down the rabbit hole. http://www.leisureland.us/audio/MellotronSamples/MellotronSamples.htm You'll need to filter the s**t...

Re: The One(s) That Got Away
A CS-80. I can't remember what the exact price was when I was asked whether I would like to buy it 11 years ago, but it was about the price of a ROMpler on discount then. ca. 1000 euro? My uncle used to store it in his house for his brother. I've also slept next to the same damn unit for about a yea...

Re: Your thoughts about rompler synthesis
I like ROMpler strings, especially the 90s variety. I don't think them not sounding realistic enough is an issue, because most listeners have become very used to those sounds on records. In fact, real string sections can sound corny on certain type of songs. Some units have surprisingly beefy analog...

Re: Help with synth spotting (Gus Gus)
It's just rather typical for the contemporary mindset to value some modest item over your more valuable possessions. Usually the sonic character of the item just resonates with the owner and he finds the design attractive for a personal reason. Out of all my distortion devices, I'm most fond of my M...

Re: Rhodes chroma - feedback
I just have to post this bit from the user comments on the VSE page: I owned 2 (!) of them, but one of them had more problems than there's room to put here. Not very road-worthy. Loved the sound, that's why I kept getting it fixed! There was a feature on it (Joe Zawinul used to use it) that made the...

Re: Synths and radiators
Since this thread has already gone to h**l I might add that some synths can also work as radiators. When it gets cold in my apartment during the winter months, I switch on all my vintage gear to provide some much needed additional warmth.
