Re: NI FM7 or FM8
With my new Roland A-500 Pro MIDI controller, the FM8 is my favorite softsynth along with Arturia JP-8V. To be able to tweak FM sounds with a hardware controller, based on patches from the DX-7 and FM7 library and other downloadable famous FM sounds has made FM synthesis much more fun! I'm also twe...

Re: NI FM7 or FM8
FM8 was better for me. I love it. It's a great synth. It hasn't fully replaced my SY77 but for more reasons than just sound quality. FM8 has a lot of uses.

Re: Kiwi-3p - Experiences?
Well I finally got around to installing the upgrade today. I've only just scratched the surface of all the new features but I've got to say I'm pretty damn impressed by it so far: it has transformed the Jx-3p. And I see what people mean about the new control interface - once you've got a hang of th...

Re: Yamaha DX7 line VS Yamaha SY77
i used sym3 for a while, but i'm more of a hardware guy than a software guy. most ppl, however ,probably would greatly prefer editing in software. I typically prefer programming synths on hardware! Especially the SY77! Have no problem zipping around the screens they are much better than DX7 menus l...

Re: Yamaha DX7 line VS Yamaha SY77
Better to get a correctly proportioned drive belt. I got mine from eBay for pocket money. Actually, better to do the simple ribbon cable mod then buy any generic pc floppy drive for £5 or less and fit it for a lifetime of use (no belt!) :) That's what I did. £5 brand new Sony drive, rock solid and ...

Re: Yamaha DX7 line VS Yamaha SY77
SY77 all the way! Unless you really want the 'legend' that is a DX7 on your synth stand! (and no problem with that). They are both great synths (The MK2, S DX7 more than the Mk1 IMO) and the SY77/99. Soundwise? The SY will do stuff no DX7 can (not even talking PCM stuff here which I never use - alwa...

Re: Which synth next?
jx#p edit: oh jx8p for dynamics and after touch... JX-3P for good sound :D Seriously - get a D-50 or Polysix - both 5 star synths (according to this here site) and both sound glorious  but then again rack mounts arnt as fun as real keyboards to programme / play does d50 keyboard have after...

Re: Kiwi-3p - Experiences?
I have to agree with you, I recently played a JX-8P and spent some time with one and I have to say I personally preferred the sound of my old JX-3P by a mile. If I was to choose between the 8 and 3 it would definitely be the 3 I would be going for, can't comment on the 10 as I've never played one w...

Re: Kiwi-3p - Experiences?
Yeah, many of the presets do sound quite different, but that's not what I meant, I think it has to do with the input level of the VCAs. With the Kiwi mod, there's adjustable velocity, and depending on it, the VCAs seem more or less overdriven, up to saturation with high resonance, and I can't find ...

Nothing like bumping a boring list thread! :) Yeah totally, everyone can appreciate a thread where you don't have to read what other people have written and just add your little thing on the end without having to actually interact with other people! Have no idea wtf you are on about. And I di...

Re: Roland's greatest synth?
Nothing like being fashionably late to the party :) Digital: D-50 or JD-800 depending on your mood/taste Analog: Jupiter 8 In my current gear: JX-3P  (in some ways a nicely limited cross of sorts between a D-50 and a Jupiter 8 sound.. if you squint your ears in just the right way, and add some ...

Re: Is this the infamous DX-7 "Rhodes" sound?
If you do, get a DX7S. They have a better front interface (black sturdy plastic buttons instead of those worn-out membrane buttons) with white print everywhere. They also cleaned up the menus so you don't have to do so much clicking, like they moved all the envelope settings on the same menu page i...

I prefer Polysix to ANY JunoSoonerBJJ wrote:Hmmmm... the PolySix is an interesting idea I hadn't considered. I'm not as familiar with the Korg but at a glance it seems to compare favorable with the Juno for my interests.

Re: Suggestions for a good Preamp/Interface?
Yamaha/Steinberg MR816X :D That is quality (for the price!) Love it! That is a great unit and I love mine as well but it's only a good suggestion for the OP if his laptop has firewire, hence my questions. Since he's not returned, I guess it's not that important. well he could get the new USB versio...
