You can also put the knobs into warm soapy water and let them soak for a day.
Rusty nuts and washers can be cleaned the same way, by using wd40.

I think that any 25W soldering iron would do for this job, there is no need to buy anything expensive.
I believe that it is easier to start DIY with simpler circuits like mixers , filters and then advance to oscillators , sequencers etc

I have used many times isopropyl alcohol for cleaning the panel of the MS 20, with excellent results. For best results I would recommend to remove all potentiometers and jacks and gently swipe the panel with a soft cloth using a few drops of isopropyl alcohol at a time, dont apply too much pressure ...
