Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
It is thought 10 GDS Systems were built. I can account for the following 5 examples and their original owners: 1. Klaus Schulze ( Death of an Analogue . Here in restoration, UK - 1 of 2 EU spec units) 2. Chris Franke ( Tangerine Dream . In Germany. Sadly only the keyboard console survives - 1 of 2 E...

Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
Now that I have an original working 1979 ADDS Regent 20 terminal that is correctly interpreting the extensive use of cursor control on the GDS I managed to program my first sound patch in the Voice program and went on to record a quick improvisation. https://soundcloud.com/hideaway-studio/the-max-fa...

Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
It always fascinates me how some materials seem to last forever (Bakelite being a nice example of a supremely stable substance) and some go depressingly unstable or simply crumble into oblivion with age... Yesterday was a particularly messy example of this... Unfortunately the 32 long throw sliders ...

Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
Just finished recapping the last S100 bus card in the IMS8000 host CP/M computer today - the floppy disk controller... http://i57.tinypic.com/2zp58w6.jpg Each card is not a huge job to recap given the right tools but its somehow curiously satisfying to undertake... http://i59.tinypic.com/10p974j.jpg...

Re: What Synth has the most Mojo?
Without a shadow of a doubt for me it has to be the classic Minimoog... (especially the early discrete oscillator models) Every time I fire my beast up (a 1976 model) it leaves an uncontrollable grin on my face. It isn't just the sound (which is f'ing gorgeous!).. its the way the thing interacts wit...

Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
THE ORIGINAL GDS ADDS TERMINAL IS FINALLY ALIVE.. ALIVE!! After a very very long story and almost reaching the point of wanting to top either myself the ADDS terminal or both I had a breakthrough.... http://i57.tinypic.com/e67yg5.jpg The other day I removed the known good “donor” tube from the GT85...

Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
Back to The Serial Terminal from h**l!.... Having spent quite some time recapping most of the S100 cards in the IMS8000 computer I turned my attention back to the dreaded ADDS Regent 20 terminal. When I started on this restoration I had in my mind all sorts of difficult scenarios resurrecting the 3...

Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
Now on the last pcb to recap today which is the floppy disk controller S100 bus card in the (huge!) IMS8000 computer. Will post some pictures later.. Then I've got to turn my attention back to reviving the GDS's dreaded ADDS Serial Terminal which is proving to be a bit of a nightmare as tracking dow...

Re: sh 101 over juno 60 bass would you.
Even so, pflosi... I love you, man... but come on. :drinks: :friends: If a person wants a horribly limited low pass-based synth for a bass synth that ISN'T a Moog, you need to help set them straight. Irrespective of whether there is a characteristic sound associated with an SH-101 synth, it can't d...

Re: That everpresent 80s Juno pad
Actually the type of sound you are describing is best heard in your first example. Although I don't doubt this is a preset in one of the later analog polysynths it is very much a bread and butter sound that has been recreated on countless synths. What, as another member has mentioned, really makes t...

Re: Best synth under £100
As a sound designer I can highly recommend the Novation K-Station... it is quite a remarkable little VA for peanuts and often overlooked... I bought mine for £100. I have a lot of synths here - both vintage and new but for some curious reason this is one of my favorite virtual analogs. I actually pr...

Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
Any RF interference problems, either with nearby equipment of yours, or any nearby neighbours? This strikes me as a design with plenty of potential for putting out hash. Actually the GDS is remarkably quiet on the electrical noise front and is surprisingly noise free on the audio side of things too...

Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
Why does it need such a big bastard power supply? It's really old school ie. linear not switched mode. The equivalent modern SMPSU would be literally 10 times smaller and 5 times lighter. The GDS is awash with TTL devices which are really power hungry en mass. The current on the local 5 volt rails ...

Re: The Crumar GDS Restoration Blog...
Arghh... I'm now being pestered by a loose connection somewhere on one of the two keyboard-circuit S100 bus cards in the IMS8000 computer. On cold startup the front panel controls are going haywire but a quick wiggle on the card and everything starts working normally again. Intermittent faults are o...

Re: Chip Removal Help!
A definite thumbs up for the Hakko 808 - it's a superb piece of kit and a real time saver but very sadly it's been discontinued. I am actually pretty peed off about this as it's simply one of the most effective/convenient desoldering tools I've ever used and use it all the time working on Will's and...
