It can be really effective to layer a bunch of stuff sometimes. It's also interesting when someone else has a go at an instrument you have had for a long time and thinks of something new to do with it. I, too remember the days of filling in patch sheets. I still do it for the Mini Moog. Snapping a digital pic would be pretty quick and easy.

You could also save drum patterns from your old drum machines that way.
