Re: Filter resonance visualization

it's my opinion that looking at these things in time domain (via a scope or a 'waveform view') is just not going to provide that much useful information. you might be seeing, as someone pointed out, differences in the waveform generation much more than how the filter affects it (depending on where ...

Re: Analogue Solutions Leipzig? Telemark?

I'm curious too. I was obsessing over the Leipzig a while back, but couldn't get myself to buy something that expensive without getting to try it first even if it sounds amazing on YouTube. I really liked how it looked though. Very old school lookin, big knobs, simple looking interface. Well, the wo...

Re: Filter resonance visualization

Thanks for the link to the MS20 filter study prinsen! Very cool. It's a bit too low-level for me though since I don't really have any engineering knowledge, but great link nonetheless. Interesting in particular is that part about Dieter Doepfer and the 6dB/octave response observation of the high pas...

Re: Filter resonance visualization

Woah. I just figured out how to load Schope/AU into Garage Band which is pretty simple to set up. This thing is blowing me away. Seeing how the graph changes as you adjust the filter is nuts. I've always wondered what it would be like if a synth had realtime visual feedback like this and now I know....

Re: Filter resonance visualization

Interesting. I know the Supernova has odd combinations like that, like HP+HP, BP+BP, HP+BP, etc. The Virus and Radias are even more flexible, although I think limited to 2 filters (if you don't count effects). So it would be possible to try HP+HP, although it leaves no room for a LPF. Still an inter...

Re: Filter resonance visualization

Here's a comparison of the MS-20 to a Supernova and Virus C. The notes I tested are F2-G#2-A#2-C3 (Schope viz only shows F2). Single oscillator, sawtooth, ADSR=0/0/10/0. On the MS-20 the HPF cutoff=5 and peak=7. I just matched the sound by ear as close as possible with the Supernova and Virus. Super...

Re: Filter resonance visualization

Oops yeah, thanks. I'm going to download it and try it out. I forgot I had a computer. Doh. Haha

I think the newer VAs do, but yeah probably not very many older analogs. I guess it's still worth seeing what LPF resonance looks like too.

Re: Filter resonance visualization

Thanks, yes definitely. Do you think it's possible to visualize it with a recording if I send you audio file/s? I suppose it would be similar to real-time right? Off the top of my head, there are three tests that I want to do: 1. MS-20 high pass resonance -- when I set the filter cutoff moderately l...

Filter resonance visualization

Has anyone tried to visualize and compare filter resonance behavior on different synths? If so, what tools/software do you use? I've seen many diagrams showing what resonance is supposed to look like, but they don't look real. I'm wondering wonder how much variation there might be from synth to synt...

Re: Stereo Analog Filter...Suggestions?

Is the OP still following this? I'm curious to hear if he can confirm what he meant by the Nord's "brittle digital edge" and if it's the same as this lack of spatiality thing we're discussing. Minor update... I just saw this graphic that shows an example sawtooth waveform and its frequency domain. B...

Re: Novation Ultranova

I was about to rant about the knob count haha ... but I got distracted by the touch button behavior. I wonder how well that works.

Not sure about you guys, but I'm not really into this "performance mode" trend that Korg is into as well. Hm...

Re: Prophet Style Knobs on Mono Evolver. Worth it?

My screen comment wasn't directed at anyone either. But I personally need explicit feedback for knob values -- whether it be pots or encoders. Listening works most of the time, but not always. Sometimes it needs to be clear such as when you don't hear a sound and you have to choose between turning f...

Re: Prophet Style Knobs on Mono Evolver. Worth it?

Who's idea was it to put f**k encoders on a synthesizer anyway? I haaaaaaate them! A very clever person. I can't stand pots on synths with patch memory, you never have the pots in the right place when you pull up a patch, then when you Ho to tweak it you either jump to the wrong value, nothing happ...

Re: The Appearance of Synths

I think layout and looks are VERY different. Layout isn't subjective, it's either well laid out or not. Looks are very subjective. I think the 800DV is super ugly but I love that retro look. I also think the XTK is super ugly but I hate that "Extreme Synth" color and type font. Both synths however,...

Re: Stereo Analog Filter...Suggestions?

I guess I'm just looking for a simple way to diminish the brittle digital edge of the Nord. If I were you I'd be looking at a delay or reverb rather than a filter. I use a mono Evolver a lot and it can be really harsh if you abuse the digital waveforms even though they're running through an analogu...
