Re: VSE Disco competition VOTING THREAD
Wow, thanks :-) I'm really surprised, although it's nice surprise. Great work from everybody and great to see so many people get involved. Agreed - all tunes were really good. As for next competition - I really like the idea of "Switched-On/Moogsploitation" one ;-) Or, as EmptySet said - "8. reinte...

Re: VSE Disco competition VOTING THREAD
haha, ditto for what he said^^^^
I swear some weeks I spend more time building, maintaining gear and browsing equipment online than I do actually playing or recording. Sometimes I think I need to lock away all my electronics and just write songs with a kazoo and a broken guitar.

Re: How to know what synthesizer to keep.
honestly with the used market inflating the prices of these analog synths daily, I am finding it difficult to justify the expense and hassle of most vintage synths. If the price of an analog synth is increasing daily, that means the value of that synth is increasing daily if you own it. It's good t...

honestly with the used market inflating the prices of these analog synths daily, I am finding it difficult to justify the expense and hassle of most vintage synths. Especially with all the new analogs by Krog, Arturia, Dave Smith, Moog, Novation and others. (Sure most of those are monos, but Elektro...

Re: what synths owe to disco music
well I hear acoustic drums and what is most likely an electric bass guitar as well as other standard studio rhythm section instruments. Again, I am sure there are plenty examples of synthy disco well before synthpop or soul/R&B acts broke synths into the mainstream. There are just as many examples o...

Re: Brian Eno DX-7 patches
I'd also not put it past Yamaha to do some transfer function gimmickry like rolling off the top end on to ameliorate aliasing artifacts. Every DAC has a reconstruction filter that does exactly what you describe, its nothing new for digital output. Despite this, there are still aliasing and other ar...

Re: Brian Eno DX-7 patches
I think a lot of the sound of some synths is in the output section. All the phat bass in the world means nothing if the output section is a cheap unbalanced op-amp chip with a narrow bandwidth. Also some types of output amps (not to be confused with a VCA) add distortion and compression artifacts th...

Re: what synths owe to disco music
It is all good and well that these acts existed. But by your own admission they were well out of the mainstream. So I see it hard to say that these acts exerted any influence that would lead to Synth evolution and acceptance 'owing' to Disco.

Re: what synths owe to disco music
Moroder notwithstanding, synths were never really that big in Disco until afer Star Wars made sci-fi hip and cool. Then it was a bunch of gimmicky pew pew pew and robot sounds. But still 90% of the instrumentation and all of the melody and counterpoint was traditional instrumentation. Of course late...

Re: Synths that didn't impress you
What made the Monotrons and monotribe so great is lost on the Volcas. Like what, trying to play actual melodies on a tiny ribbon? At least membrane keys can be played and they have superior sequencers. They're classic Korgs...impressive for the price if not impressive overall ;) Like being fun litt...

Okay the 'polyphony' kinda sucks, but it is one of the brattiest sounding Moogs I own.
It just sounds...fluorescent?

Re: Synths that didn't impress you
The Volcas What made the Monotrons and monotribe so great is lost on the Volcas. Adding all those function + _ Key parameters expanded the abilities of the boxes a bit. But they are just not as intuitive to use at all. The monotrons and monotribe are easy, straightforward and intuitive. The Volcas a...

Haha, what? This is trance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq7BtlKctpc okay that is totally not anythign I would identify with. "Uplifting" is the exact opposite of what I am trying to achieve in my music. Especially that fizzy sound that kind of music always seems to have. Ick. Makes me want to lic...
