Re: Just how far have synths come in the last 20 years?

Computing power and chip technology has continued its geometric growth. SMT tech has allowed companies to squeeze a ton of power into a tiny footprint. The KORG miniturization empire has been enabled by this trend. The actual technologies involved may not have advanced incredibly, but bang for buck ...

Re: Best Digital Synth to Compliment Analog Setup

I'm a big fan of the CZ series. Not everyone's cup of tea for sure, but they can still be had very cheaply. They are also capable of great string sounds and while they can sound warm, they also do the cold-digital-80s thing nicely. The output can be gritty due to the nature of the DACs in the units....

Synthex 2

Synthex Madness. Mario Maggi has apparently had this in the works. 61 key keyboard and desktop module.

Twisted Electrons Acid8

Looks interesting, sounds decent. But...how many acid boxes can the market handle?

Re: Looking for a synth to replace Microkorg

This post sounds like an advertisement for the MS-2000. A little background. The Korg MS-2000 came out a few years before the microKORG. It's essentially the same instrument--it has the same engine under the hood and all the same specs, as far as I know. It's just compressed from the MS-2000's knob-...

Re: Novation Bass Station II in the band context?

Part of what gives the BSII an edge is that there are some easily accessible parameters to give it more edge and bite: a sub-oscillator (with selectable waveform!) and a filter drive knob. They shouldn't be abused, but they add nice girth to bass patches. You can quickly design very meaty bass passes.

Re: New Elka Synthex?

What are the chances that any serious plans to manufacture brand new replica Synthexes out of new parts are in the works if he can't sell more than 31 NOS Synthexes in a month for less than half of what original vintage ones go for? I thought it said in the video that the components inside would be...

Re: Why can't they build them like this?

All joking aside, things have worked out pretty well. It doesn't feel like such a long time ago that I had a SUN Sparcstation 20 for a workstation (which had dual 85MHz processors and 512MB of RAM onboard, with a 4GB HDD and a 24-bit color video adapter running Solaris 2.4) working on SGI Challenge...

Re: Greetings From Yamaha USA Pro Music Customer Support

I'd like to see a knobby FM 'board. I was digging on the concept art from a year ago of 3 new synths from Yammy (FM, VA and Phys Mod), but would prefer to have at least 4 octaves, not 3. Same here. Something like the DX200 in 3 or 4 octave keyboard format (Without the sequencer and drums to save on...

Re: 60 Year Old Tube Instrument Resurrected!

Those tones are beautiful. That would be a gem for someone to record with in a studio. Definitely more than a glorified stylophone. I'm curious how the solovox compares. Demos I've heard have sounded much more raw and not nearly as sonorous as that J6. Anyway, wonderful work for a rare piece of elec...

Yeah, I'm probably being way too technical. I'm sure it varies subjectively for each person, as well.

Re: Roland JD-Xa

On a dark or poorly lit stage, red is the easiest and least stressful color for eyes to see. Just sayin' This is true, but that shiny surface reflecting any overhead lights has got to be annoying. Don't get me wrong, I like Tron just as much as the next guy, but this and the aira series are are ter...
