Re: tube amps

You may have to jumper the channels (which is what they did when this particular model was used as a guitar amp), but I think you should be able to get a decent sound by cranking the channel volume all the way up and then turning up the overall volume via the master. Try it like that first. Scott

Re: tube amps

First off, it's going to cost you to have that re-coned. It's up to you, as the re-coned JBL will sound good, but whether or not it sounds as good as what you have now is rather subjective, as far as I'm concerned. If it were me, I'd sell the JBL as-is. GD is also correct and hits on a point I touch...

Re: tube amps

It's a single 15 cabinet or a 2x15 cabinet? You can go either way with the head, if it's a 2x15 and you have two 15" 8 ohm speakers. If it's a single 15 cab, you'll want to match your head to your speaker, understand? We can wire two 8 ohm speakers to be 8 ohms or 4 ohms. A single speaker will ... w...

Re: tube amps

Check out the Sun and see if you like it - if you do, then you're good to go. Add more inputs by throwing a line mixer in front of it, you know? Either the Shure or the Fender will be fine, too: they're pretty much the same in my book. This will start an argument, but I don't mean to: Most every amp...

Re: Replacing cheap 12AX7a tube with....

I've never used the golds - those seemed like hifi purist stuff to me and in musical application (unless you're doing it for vocals), hifi is not necessarily a good thing.

Ugh! Clavier, you're killin' me!

Re: tube amps

That Fender head would actually do the job quite nicely. If I remember correctly, you could jumper the channels on those, too, and use 'em for guitar amps. Not the best sounding PA head, but it would work for what you want to do. Meatball - that's a great deal on that gear! Synthecks - you may want ...

That's pretty green, Tron! I'll have to show it to one of my boys, as he likes green. Of course, he'll probably want me to do my 909 like that, then.

Re: tube amps

Hmmm ... that doesn't sound good. This is the new speaker?

Which Fender PAs? I used to be a dealer and used one in a band many, many years ago, so I know a bit.

Enough to tell you to keep looking!

Re: Replacing cheap 12AX7a tube with....

JJs are good, as are the new Sovteks (now made in the same factory, I have heard).

Another good place to find tubes are radio fests (shortwave, etc.). I walked away with a box of tubes for five bucks at one - dug out three pairs of matched 5881s! Got to get to those swap meets! :)

Agh! He beat me to it! Neonlights84 was very easy to work with and fun to correspond with, too. I recommend him for any transaction.

Re: tube amps

No, I don't think the speaker is too much for the amp. Frankly, knowing how some Kustoms are built, it may just be too much for the cabinet itself - if the cabinet itself is loose in any way, you're gonna rattle it. That speaker is so efficient that it's probably blowing the thing apart! I would ope...

Re: tube amps

Univalves are very cool amps and come in a couple of different sizes (or used to). I played with one extensively right after they released it (didn't get to see the prototype) and was very impressed. I've built a couple of kits for guys that allow you to hot-swap tubes, too. I like the idea, but don...

Re: Roland CR-8000

As Syn303 hinted at, the CR-8000 is the precursor to the TR-808. I wouldn't say you'll need a manual for programming, though, but they are available online should you want one. You can get modding kits at Analogue Solutions, but you'll also find plenty of how-to's on the web. You can easily add tone...

Re: tube amps

... (Im looking for that over driven / warm tube sound), Im thinking about 4 15" @ 1000W total, just looking for the right bass head. 1000 watts? Then you SURE aren't looking for tubes! For one thing, in order to reach that amount of power, you'd have to run roughly 32 6L6s full-on. The amount of h...
