There were two slightly different versions of the Mini-Korg 700S. Afaik, only the second version** had a fine-tune slider in the "effects" section. Moreover, they use different types of switches for 'effect', 'sustain long' and 'travel vibrato'; the first version has white plastic switches, whereas ...

Well, back in the 70's and early 80's there were a number of multi-instrument keyboards that came with choir & human voice sounds. Some of these could be considered as "proper" synthesizers in that they made use ofreal VCO's, VCF's. VCA's and EG's alongside top-octave/divide down technology. Here ar...

BBC Radiophonic Workshop

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here on VSE have the following BBC Radiophonic Workshop albums in their vinyl collection? The Radiophonic Workshop (1975): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f5/Theradiophonicworkshop.jpg Through a Glass Darkly (Peter Howell, 1978): http://upload.wikimedia.org/w...

Well, you could try to get hold of a Chamberlin :) 'cause that's what they used for the high trumpets on that song. The fat synth chords appearing in the middle-part were probably done by multi-tracking a Minimoog (or EMS Synthi), or are you saying that part is the Arp Solina? When Bowie and his liv...

Ah I see, so it has a MOD button in place of the TRUMPET button!?

I wonder if it could be an aftermarket modification since the earliest version did have the TRUMPET preset but was lacking the MOD button.

hmmm.. I don't recall to ever have seen one with only three push-buttons on the right-hand side of the front panel. Even the version pictured in the ARP publicity from 1974 had the trumpet button and afaik that was the first version of the string ensemble. That version didn't have the modulation but...

The Jup-4 and OB-Xa were used just as much as the Jup-8 on NGD. And don't forget the Korg 770 mono synth which he still used at the time. The Jup-8 was added to his studio setup just in time for NGD but it wasn't part of his live rig until the fall of 1982. I forgot about the Korg. Watching those o...

Great information - I have some great live performances taped on Betamax (how 80's is that?) back when they were touring NGD - and indeed, all the synths listed make a prominent appearance. BTW - not trying to hijack the thread here, but since we're on Simple Minds synths - Micke, what synths were ...

Great song, not sure about the synth.... What synth makes the phat poly chords in the chorus of their hit "Don't you forget about me"? I would like to know! I'm pretty sure that's the Oberheim OB-8 (or possibly OB-Xa). I know for a fact that Michael MacNeil replaced his old OB-Xa with an OB-8 somet...

Re: Somebody Up There Likes You (Simple Minds) -- what synth

Have always loved this track, and am wondering if anyone knows the synth that was used for the main melody. I'm talking about that mysterious, ethereal melody that starts around 1:09 and 2:49. Great song anyway. Thanks for any info. The OB-Xa does the sustained chords heard at 1:09 and 2:49. The ot...

Yes that's right, Assault on precinct 13 (1976), Halloween (1978) and The Fog (1979) were all done on an extended Moog modular IIIP. http://hem.bredband.net/linmik/Assaultalbumcover.JPG http://hem.bredband.net/linmik/Halloween.JPG http://hem.bredband.net/linmik/Fog_2.JPG Carpenter's score to his ver...

You're welcome, scntfc

Let me know if you happen to have any more questions about Carpenter's early synth-scores. I have gear listings for most of his scores (incl. the earliest ones) as well as for many other electronic scores from the '70s and '80s.

cheers,
Micke
