Can Anyone Recreate This Sound With Virtual Instruments?

Post by EricP1954 » Sat Jul 08, 2017 7:07 am

Hi, new here and trying to work out a cover performance of Allan Holdsworth' Sundays, a tune he wrote in 1989. Since he was a guitar player, he used an outboard controller (Synthaxe).

You can here the tune at this link:

I've gotten a pretty accurate transcription of the tune, and I love the sound, which to me sounds like part pipe organ and part vocal pad. Allan said this was simply a preset from an Oberheim Matrix 12. A friendly member (see below) advised me that this is not the case, because the M12 did not have a pipe organ preset.

I'm looking for ideas to get these sounds. I only have a Yamaha TX-802 but a also I have a variety of virtual instruments. If someone is willing to set up a combination of patches to recreate a similar sound as on Sundays, I will compensate the player for the work and time, you can post here or message me, send me a quick MP3 or Soundcloud link of just a few seconds so I can hear, and we can take it from there and work something out.

Re: Identify The Matrix 12 Preset

I don't there is a church organ patch in the M12 presets.

Here is a listing:

And there is only one "organ" patch that comes with the M12V. So buying the M12 isn't going to give you this sound.

But, it doesn't have to be an M12, as many synths can do church organ type patches - they are not really that difficult to synthesize either. So any decent patch on a synth with loads of reverb and the right drawbar/tone settings will fulfil this role, I think.

Thanks for your thoughts, desmond and relating your knowledge about the M12 and the M12V :) The Synthaxe comes with a box (forgot what they call it) that has transposition settings on it, so in a way, the synthaxe processing box could work like a drawbar. I agree that getting the sound would probably not be too difficult.
