Haven't been on here in years. Had to register all over again.
Gonna get straight to the point: I want to sell my JP8. It needs a new battery but otherwise it's in great shape, both physically and operationally. Question is, should I replace the battery before selling it or sell it as is? The guy I usually have service my synths says he can't do it and the only other place is ridiculously expensive. I have no soldering skills so DIY isn't an option.
Ironically, my Juno 60'so now in need of a battery too.
Thoughts?

Get the battery replaced - either by a tech or by DIY ... whichever way works correctly.voicedoodpaolo wrote:Haven't been on here in years. Had to register all over again.

Personally, if I was going to spend mega $$ on a JP-8, I'd want to see that it lights up and works correctly... I wouldn't want promises that it used to work OK ... there may be other issues (eg dead capacitors, dying power supply) that you only know about once it's powered up.
JP-8's go for a bomb now so I'm sure that you'd make your money back if you got a tech to resolder the battery.
Good luck with the sale... personally, I'd love one of these things.

I'd be interested to know why your usual tech can't do it. Replacing the battery is a relatively inexpensive repair and demonstrates good will on your part. As a buyer, I wouldn't expect it to work perfectly, but a receipt for recent service would give me more confidence to buy then not having it would. Most good techs, like mechanics, will mention other problems they see or anticipate, so that's info you can share with the buyer to make you appear more knowledgeable. These things are desirable enough that you could probably build the repair price into your asking price.

Yep ... agree with all of that... a good tech will be able to find problems you didn't know were there or may be developing.Bricago wrote:I'd be interested to know why your usual tech can't do it. I took my JD-800 in for a service once for a slide potentiometer scrub and clean (JD800 owners will sympathise...) ... anyway, the tech also found a small problem with the power supply and a cracked solder joint in the display (the display would occasionally briefly flicker when playing)... both were very simple fixes and he threw them in as part of the much larger job of cleaning all of the sliders.
I bought the synth from a previous owner and he gave me the previous service notes for the synth showing that it had a replacement keyboard (no red goo worries) and a general going over ... the problems I had may have always been there or may have developed but either way, the tech knew what to look for and it came back 100%.
I would strongly urge you to take it to a good tech and ask for 'one with the lot' ... I'd be mighty pi*sed if I bought a dud JP8.

I dunno why he says he can't do it. In the past he has worked on a prophet 5 and an OB8. The first time Iy went he had a JP8 on his work table. I guess he must not need the work. He always had great pricing and would always let me know ahead of doing any additional work. I'm thinking he doesn't want to work so much anymore.
I'll try to find another tech. You'd think here in the bay area there'd be more options.
Thanks for the responses

Re: Wanna sell my Jupiter 8
Would be handy if you tell us where you are.
Somebody on the forum can help you with a technician who's reliable.
If you use the search option on the board, you also might find someone with the right skills who can help you out.

I know who you're talking about. He's a great tech, and doesn't want to dig into uncharted territory outside of Oberheims and Sequential synths anymore. A battery change may lead to other stuff needing to be done.
If I didn't personally have a J8 myself, I would still pay 7k for one with a bad battery. There are so few on the market, you may even get more even with a bad battery or more issues. I also wouldn't attempt a battery change without the proper tools. On a J8 you should be using a desoldering gun and not trying to wick it out
If I still lived in the bay I would do it for free just to compare against my own. You don't see J8s very often anymore.
