Anybody has an idea what was the anachronic synth used on Buddy Holly's “love is strange” ?
I always thought that it was added in the 80s or 90s during a remastering and that an original version without the synth existed. First, because to me it sounds more like a 70s or 80s synth than a primitive electric instrument, and it is polyphonic. Also, its sound is very warm, it has a lot of reverb on, and it is very present in the mix like it's the water the rest of the instruments are bathed in, which is so not what a 50s rock'n'roll recording engineers would have done. And most of all, the idea of Buddy Holly and a synthesizer in the same room just seems like science-fiction.
But it seems that there was only one version and that this synth has always been there.
Now, I read that, though the song was recorded in 1959 shortly before Buddy Holly died, it was released ten years later, in 1969. So there are chances that the synth indeed was added later. But 1969 is still early to me for that sound.
