iPad vs. Roland PG-800 (JX-8P/MKS-70)

Post by logix » Sat Nov 07, 2020 8:07 pm

Does anyone used an iPad as a replacement for a Roland PG-800 programmer and can share their experiences?

I actually have a PG-800 along with a JX-8P and an MKS-70 but am considering selling the programmer along with the JX-8P, and instead use an iPad (with the iPG-800 app) with the MKS-70 mainly to declutter my desk, but the JX-8P will probably also fetch a better price with the programmer.

Pros and cons?

Pros: The iPad sliders and knobs changes to show the actual settings when you call up a pad. This is really great in comparison with the hardware.
It also includes jx3 and alpha juno virtual controllers.

Cons: not as tactile as the real thing, uses up the midi connectors. (Not a problem when you use a computer and a DAW or of you have a good midi-patchbay).

Fortunately I have a MIDI patchbay (Roland A-880), so that leaves the tactile feel. I should probably use the iPad app over time before deciding to sell or keep the PG-800.
Thanks for your input :)
