Surprise message when repairing my synth...

Post by Tekhed66 » Sun Nov 20, 2022 1:56 pm

Hi all

I was trying (unsuccessfully) to repair the LCD screen on my Triton Rack ... there's a fair amount of disassembly and unplugging/re-plugging involved and I accidentally forgot to reconnect a screw to a PCB which was a little bit critical to the operation...

I saw this display when I rebooted the synth
"Nigel Error"

Cheeky sods :-)

I couldn't fix the screen but it gave me a laugh

Poor Nigel!

Out of curiosity, what's the issue with the display?

Hi Jojo

Sorry... just saw your post.

My screen has developed vertical lines of dead pixels on one side of the screen... you can get rid of most of them by turning the contrast all the way up and it then 'fills in' the blank line ... there's one line that refuses to remain filled in so it looks as if I'm stuck with it.

The screen is still legible and mostly OK... I've seen pics of some screens that have this condition really bad... I suppose it's just a condition of aging screens... god knows I've got more lines on me now than I used to

Most of the times when single pixel rows (or columns) are stuff, it's not the display that's dead but a connector being loose. Re-soldering the display connector may (or may not) help.

Hi Jojo

Yeah that's what I thought it might be... I've seen repair videos where the display was fixed by simply pressing down on the connector ribbon cable and creating a better contact... I'm pretty sure that it's just a bad connection because you can make the line disappear by turning the contrast all the way up (black screen) and then slowly back to a normal setting ... unfortunately, the line eventually reappears but at least i know there's some sort of connection.

The inside of the Triton Rack is a minefield... I stopped before actually taking the display completely out... I might have been able to fix it and will probably try again but I knew when to say 'enough for now'... the display is still very legible (it's just bloody annoying to look at) :D
