What were the towers for on a Synclavier?

I'm just really curious but how did those towers work in the back? I presume that was what was making the sounds, and basically, the Synclavier keyboard was just controlling what was going on in there?

Does anyone have any resources on how the PSMT worked in particular? How much do these go for these days, and can the Synclavier Regen recreate a lot of what the PSMT could do?

Pretty much - the original Synclavier models were built around a repurposed minicomputer that was one of NED's earlier products, running its own OS and driving separate FM & sample recording/playback hardware; the rack housed all of that.
