UPDATE: Anyone done the Poly 800 Moog Slayer? - I Have!

Post by translucencecs » Fri Mar 16, 2007 10:04 pm

So I just won a Korg Poly 800 for $50... I only put in a little speculative bid - wasn't expecting to win, but can't complain..! :)

I've had two Poly 800s in the past, and really like them, but I have to admit that I'd like just a little more "Oomph"!

So, as I'd heard about the "Moog Slayer" mod for the Poly 800 in the past, I started wondering if I should try it - it's only $50, after all..!

Has anyone here ever done this mod? Any opinions?

I'm particularly interested to know how easy others have found it, and if (as it says on the tin) it's truly a speaker-destroyer! Is it appropriately named?

BTW - For those that are unaware of this mod for the Korg Poly 800 / EX-800, the main page is here: http://www.synthmod.net/korg/moog_slayer/, and some MP3 examples of modded Polys in action are here: http://www.synthmod.net/korg/moog_slayer/notes/

Hmmm..!

Hmmm... 3 and 4 knobs... Do those have the FM mod done too?

BTW - to any Poly 800 owners who are unaware of this mod - check out the demos... They're astonishing, compared to what I know the Poly 800 does in its unmodified form... Seriously.

I only hope that this mod is not only on the level, but also easy to do!

From what I understand, it's an easy mod. I don't know much about electronics, so I'm not going to attempt it myself. However, I asked my dad if it would be difficult, and after looking at the page told me it would be easy. When he's done, I'll try test it out and see how it sounds.

Question for radek tymecki - even with the moog slayer and FM mods, I thought there would only be 3 knobs. What does the 4th one do? And what about the jack by the knobs?

i'm not extremely good with electronics, but i can do a half decent solder. that being said, from the directions for the mod, i would try it if i had gotten one for 50 bucks.

as it is, i bought my poly800 with the mod already done, and it's awesome. i hope these don't suddenly get extremely popular and overpriced :P

Fancy telling us how to do this? I know about the FM and Moogslayer, but not these two mods.

I modded an EX-800 to have the audio in.
Audio in replaces the noise. It´s simply a jack that is soldered on to the noise source.
I used to have the schematics to that mod but not anymore.

Used to have an EX-800, modded it to have the Chord Memory function which I liked on the Poly-800. One of the best features of the Poly-800 IMHO.

The 12db/oct output is on pin 5 of the NJM2069 filter chip (next to the 24db on pin 6)...

I'd seriously need to see accurate circuit diagrams/photos before I did this one..!
