Nena - 99 Red Balloons

Post by Leeroy Jenkins » Thu Jul 05, 2007 1:11 pm

Does anyone know what synthesizers were used in 99 Red Balloons? The opening chords sound like they were played on an Oberheim, and the synth bass during the verses sound like a Prophet, but I am not really sure.

Any ideas? Micky?

This is them live in '83 but I don't know if they used the same synths on the actual release.

The original music video also had the Oberheim, I would say that is pretty much what they are using.

Oberheim OB-X for the meaty bass riff and chords. They also used a Minimoog on that album.

I watched that live vid... ick... I think my cover band plays it better.

But then again, we don't have anyone on lead pit hair.

And I, as a potential audience member, am quite thankful for that!

The original german video only features an unplugged Prophet-5 and also tries to have us think that the beginning bass riff comes from a real bass.
The video for the english version (red balloons) also comprises what looks like live footage where an Oberheim can be spotted.

That pad at the beginning is a miracle!
I can't understand if it is from 99 luftbaloons or a previous song.
And is it a ppg wave?

The Oberheim Matrix 1000 has a preset called "* 99 *"

If The "obxjmp" and "totohorn" presets are any indicator, that suggests the original was done with one of its pappies :)

Here's Jack Spider's preset demo from another Matrix 1000 thread:

Umm, answering an 8 year old post is kinda pointless.

Especially when it's your only comment. Communicator, you're officially the tool of the day, dumbass, 2015 version of JonTron. Congratulations, thanks for your completely useless contribution.

The person's new here. Perhaps cutting him/her a little slack would be nice?
